I have not been to Texas in 5 years due to the low bird numbers, I have been told that there are huntable numbers in the southern panhandle. I'm 71 and can't hunt hard anymore but I have a GSP that has not seen a wild quail in 5 years would love to have one more Texas quail hunt. I have 2 contacts in the Haskell county and Hall county area and just wondering if it's worth driving 1000 miles for one more hunt. Any feed back and advise would be greatly appreciated. Would like to hear some hunt reports from the rolling plains.
.
THANKS IN ADVANCE, GA DOG

I'm on a lease outside of Dickens, TX. We have birds. Very encouraged with what I saw last weekend.

My guess is that Hall County would be better than Haskell. Just east of Haskell has been pretty dry.

I hunted by myself in Dickens County three days last week and we probably averaged 3 coveys for every 2 hours the dogs were on the ground. That's the most wild bobs that my 6 year old Britt has seen. My pup had a blast too.
That was west of where you are talking about,

A couple of folks that have hunted the Madador WMA report finding a few birds there too.

They are not making more time. What is on your list that is more important than spending time with you dog? Drive down and spend a couple of days out in the field with him. If you have grandkids the right age, bring them along!

There are some pockets, as always. I would be surprised if there are huntable numbers in very many places.

I have heard good things about blues further West.

Having had very limited quail on my place in Dickens county the last 4 years we have been blessed with a excellent crop this year. I have observed at least 4 individual coveys with 15 to 20 birds in each on my 160 acres. Loads of hawks looking of opportunities but looking forward to hunting this bounty in Dec, Jan and Feb

Only had a few people out so far and I've only ran two dogs for about 3 hours on a warm windy afternoon on our place in Dickens, but good healthy, 15 to 20 bird coveys seem to be all over the ranch this year. And we have only been on 4,000 of the 10,000 acres so far, The other 6,000 is fed heavily too! I'm looking forward to Jan / Feb.

Lease in Kent Co. seems to have a decent crop of birds. Has great crop of burs.

I took my older Britt pheasant hunting last weekend. Farm land with no burs or cactus. He kind of ran funny of a minute without boots. peep
