I'm thinking of putting a silencer on my AR 15. It's set up with night vision right now and was thinking of placing a silencer on it. Thoughts?

Con: makes it longer, NFA is dumb, ATF is ghey
Pros: more enjoyable to shoot

I got my first can in 2011 and have zero regrets.

I have not taken the plunge yet but I love shooting next to people using cans.

Dirty. It seems I remember Mr Wilson recommending cleaning the AR after very few rounds when shooting suppressed.

What do you hope to achieve?

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

On most AR's you'll want to change to an adjustable gasblock if you don't already have one. As WP mentioned above, they'll run super-dirty if you don't.

The extra length and dirt are the only negatives. You will very shortly want an sbr if you don’t already have one.

The pros outweigh the cons.

the only real con is the wait time.

They shine much better on a bolt gun.

I did have to have clean my my DI gun after every use with a suppressor. That is the con but if you switch to an SBR in a piston system AR you will have the best of both worlds.

When you shoot it you will say "how did I ever get along with out one before"

Not really many downsides as most have mentioned. One I can think of is the handling when you kick the bucket. Make sure your wife or family knows that its a NFA item and doesnt go selling it on Craigslist.

Just dirty in ARs. I actually prefer them on bolt actions.

Agree with the last two posts. Good hearing protection seems far cheaper and less inconvenience.

Makes shooting more enjoyable

Con:
You’ll get all your guns threaded and buy QD mounts for each. And you’ll want more suppressors at some point.

Go to Phodera Armory and secure a caliber specific self cleaning suppressor.

I run mine on both too. Semi auto is louder, and dirtier with gas coming back at me. Not that I'm going to stop running it on the AR, but I'll agree that they are more enjoyable on a bolt.

Is there a recommended adjustable gas block? I don't think my Ruger MPR has one.

There are many to choose from. I believe this one is pretty well thought of around here:
