So every year on the week of my birthday (17th) I take off half the week to head up to our lease in Archer county as my "bday present" from the wife. The las couple years I've been able to connect on my buck on this annual trip and this year did not disappoint.

I made it in just in time for the afternoon hunt Wednesday. My dad had told me about a big wide 8pt he had seen the Sunday before so I was really hoping to get an eye on him. His blind is on the edge of a ~200 acre wheatfield so you can see quite a bit of country and a lot of animals, but not always have a shot just cause of the sheer distance. It didnt take long for the does to start trickling into the field, and I see a buck with a wide frame with about 30 min of shooting light left. He slowly makes his way towards me, but it was too late for a shot when I was finally able to determine he was a shooter.

The next morning I sit in his blind again, lots of pigs, does, and young bucks but no shooters. That afternoon I had nearly the same situation as the afternoon before - he popped out within shooting distance right at dark, but I just couldnt quite make him out so I held off.

Thursday evening my dad and a few other buddies show up to camp and of course my dad is going to hunt his blind - so I plan to go to one of my newer blinds on the other side of the lease that I set up a couple years ago. I only hunted it a handful of times and we have a SpyPoint camera on that feeder so we obviously weren't sure what all was coming into it.

Friday morning I had 5 doe come in right after feeder goes off and they stick around for a good bit but eventually moved off. After about half an hour I hear a faint shot in the distance and almost immediately get a text from my dad saying he busted that wide 8. The group text of all the guys hunting out there starts blowing up with all the Congrats! and Picture requests. As I'm texting my dad I look up and a beautiful heavy dark horned ten had just stepped out looking towards the feeder. With no does to be seen he puts his nose down and starts towards the direction the does went. I've got a pretty narrow window before he gets out of sight but I was able to get my 30-06 up and lined up on his shoulder right before he made it to the mesquite thicket. He mule kicked and crashed into the thicket but only made it 10-15 yds.

Per the text message times, me and my pops got our bucks within 10 minutes of eachother.

One hell of a Birthday present!

The story and bucks are great, congrats. But, the real value here is the memory with dad. Lock it away, in as much detail as you can now, because there will come a day when that will bring a smile to your face as big as the one in the pics you shared.

Great bucks, great story and great memories. Both good looking bucks. I should hesitate to say this, but two good looking men as well.
