Went to the local seafood market down the road to pick up a nice thick red snapper filet to grill. Bought a nice one for tomorrow. Saw they had fresh sardines so bought some to grill for this evening. Prepared them like I had watched them doing while traveling in Spain. They turned out awesome. Ate the whole plate for dinner by itself washed down by cold local beer.

Have you eaten them like that? Would you try? You just pick them up and eat right off the bone. Skin turns out a bit crispy.

When in Rotterdam (or Amsterdam, Imforget) I ordered a Caesar Salad and asked if they could put some chicken on it. The waiter looked at me funny and said “we can put sardines on it”. I went with that, and the sardines were big, and looked like the ones TurkeyHunter showed. Honestly, I’d have rather had chicken.

A couple of questions;

Where is this market?
Did you eat the fish bones and all?

I like fried smelts this way.

yes, do the bones get soft? maybe steam them first to soften the bones, then grill.

Ranch 99 market in Frisco sells all kinds of weird Asian chit including live stuff. eeks333

I cleaned them when I got back to rental. Super fresh ones are often cooked in Portugal or Spain without being cleaned.

Carlton is my go to beer here. It’s like a good quality, easy to drink lager.

Carrum Downs, Victoria, Australia

You can either use a knife and fork to lift off the meat or just pick it up and remove the whole side with your teeth. You don’t eat the bones and head. But will will get a few bones in the meat that are no bother. The edible part just comes right off no problem.

They would probably fall to pieces if you steamed them. The bones are really no worry.

These are popular in Portugal, parts of Spain and definitely places like Sardinia.
