I know a lot of times we discuss the very known tactics of hunt the wind, minimize your scent and movements, hunt the weather and moon phases, don't marginalize mid day sitting, create "preserve areas", hand corn roads, try different food sources, rattling, doe can, grunting etc.etc. My question is, what about any lesser known, unconventional type tactics? I used to work with an old boy that would keep a milk gallon of his own urine throughout the week and would "refresh" any scrapes and rub areas with his urine, the more the merrier he would claim. Also said it would bring in the biggest bucks. Besides this one, what are some others that have worked for you??

With DQ kids statement does that leave one to believe urinating near your blind is just a bad myth from the past? No jug needed.

A gallon jug of week old pea would get pretty strong. I don’t have confidence in this . I have peas in scrapes before with no luck. However what I have seen is bucks freshening up scrapes after a rain .

I’ve got 1 but it’s too good to post on an open forum.

I’m a big fan of using a tailgate feeder and getting animals used to a vehicle.

I figured out long ago that peeing in a bottle and packing it out was a useless waste of time.

I pee in a qt bottle but pour it out when I leave for the day. Mainly because I'm too lazy to get out of the blind just to pee.

Years ago when I had the opportunity to hunt the hill country/canyons around Ozona and Sonora, I would carry a slingshot with me and when working my way up a header walking just below the ridge I would shoot rocks into the bottom to flush out the deer. Shot a lot of deer flushing out the top end and a few nice bucks sneaking out the bottom end.....

Thanks for the sling shot tip. Excellent idea. And thanks for veering away from the urine theme. up

I had an uncle who hunted out of his favorite ground blind near Hondo. He said that when the wind was wrong for the hunt he'd take an onion along & cut it in half & rub it along the window ledges of the blind. Swore deer never smelled him. I never tried it. confused2

I just might try this. The old boys knew some stuff that has been lost. Never be afraid to learn from your elders. up

I can see that working but my eyes would be watering so bad I wouldn't be able to shoot bang

Statutes of limitations are gone or at least I know the old guy is long gone.
Every year for 5 or 6 years or more the local paper had a picture of Oscar with another Bobcat from opening morning.

Asked the Father-in-law where the heck did Oscar hunt that had all those Bobcats. Seems Oscar would shoot Red Birds the weeks before opening morning and hang them around his stand.

had a lease that bordered a very large wheat field on the north side-other end of the wheat was the highway-county road to the east-mule deer would come from the west side that was fairly open-we'd glass deer 100 yards into the wheat and we'd circle around to the north west corner of our property and walk with in 50 yards of the wheat field and slowly walk east along the fence-go slow enough the deer wouldn't spook per say, but they'd creep east towards the county road-closer we get to the county road to more the deer would move towards our side of fence-eventually they jump the fence onto our side and BANG FLOP!

Not entirely uncommon but I once knew an old timer who would put a sweaty shirt in his stand with the belief deer would get used to scent. Never tried it myself but it makes sense, as does putting objects in the windows of box blinds to make it less obvious when no one is sitting in them.
