My son got picked for a youth hunt at San Angelo state park. Has anyone ever hunted there? Do you have any expert advise? Where is a good place to stay? My camping days are done....

We were drawn as well for antlerless/Spike 10/27-29. If you google it there's someone who did a hunt and posted a review on here and there's a youtube video or two. Looks like it's a quality hunt from hunt statistics for the last 2 years. I booked a cabin for $50 a night at the state park and they still had some available last night.

Burn ban is in effect, so only propane cooking.

Here is the hunt review from J08: Hunt Review

There were more reviews on a bowsite I am on, but their search function isn't working very well.

Basically, they have 40 blinds and have 21 hunters. Bring chairs for blinds and hand corn if you like. I've seen lots of good reviews on SASP. Lots of deer and hogs and javelina, especially early in the year.

If anyone else stays in the cabins, I'll be there with with my 11 year old son, and my 15 year old and wife may come out and try and get a standby hunt. Would love to meet up after hunts if staying at the cabins. Might even try and make a group dinner or something like that. Feel free to message me! Don't post very often but will try and check in every day.

I hunted with my daughter on a youth hunt back in 2012 at San Angelo SP. We stayed at the State Park in a tent. It sure was windy during the night up there. There are hotels in San Angelo on the west side of town that are close to the main headquarters which are off of Hwy 67. Get yourself a hotel for this hunt.
We hunted off of FM 2288 on the westside of the lake. Seen lots of deer back then. The blinds were small and you definitely want to take yourself some chairs for the blind. Take lots of corn and spread down each and every lane or opening that you can see.
Good luck!

My son got drawn last year and shot a doe in early October antlerless hunt. Pretty good hunt and set ups and really friends park staff. Camp inside the park or hotels are 20min away

My 2 kids were drawn, but 1 was also drawn for a TYHP hunt the same weekend and he ended up shooting a doe on Sunday night at SASP after the TYHP hunt ended at noon. It was his only sit for the hunt. My 11 year old passed on some skin and bone does with twin fawns, but shot a javelina, wild hog and an axis buck during the weekend.

Well, it was hot for the first 2 days then pouring today. I saw 2 deer, a group of javelina and my daughter only saw javelina. She killed one of them. Once the javelina knew we were throwing corn you couldn't keep them away. Guys working the hunt are great, if I could just get the weather to cooperate...
