I have several Mag Lites and was wondering if they can be upgraded. Are there better bulbs or reflector assemblies that can be installed to improve output? Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,
Don

save your money and get an LED or something similar

I've got a SureFire GP a friend gave me and it's about 5 inches long and puts out so much more than the 4 D cell Mag Lites it's unreal. I guess it spoiled me. And I think you're probably right about the upgrade. Thanks for the input, rsquared, I appreciate it. I'll probably farm out the MagLites to the kids and grandkids. God Bless,
Don

Dont waste the money on the upgrade, not worth it. I use my streamlight rechargable led's everyday for work and probably wouldnt have anything else honestly. Depends on the size you want , get a strion or stinger.

Maglites are the same brighness regardless of the # of batteries, they sell one with an LED or you can buy the LED and out it on your old maglite.

I just picked up a coleman red blue and white led, it was $29 it's pocket size and bright.
I like my maglites, they all have LEDs, to each their own.

Wow, so much misinformation, where to start???
Yes they can be upgraded. For example, a 4 D cell flashlight, a more than 150% increase in candlepower for the price of a $6 bulb.

You can get Maglites with LED's in AA or D cell.

The more batteries, the brighter the light... see chart.

You can get Maglites for less than $20.

Love my Maglites. grin

Gary

Ok I hope nobody thought I was including AA powered mags, as for the difference in candlepower, I've yet to notice that 8k difference as its generally accepted that twice the candlepower is when a human eye can notice a difference. Similar to a logarithmic scale (decibels) or how we measure temp, 20F isn't twice as hot as 10F. Look at a 1.5 million candlepower flashlight, does it really make a 50x stronger beam than a 30k maglite? Furthermore you're simply playing with useless numbers as the above chart merely states the bulb brightness at the source. More important are the foot candles or lux of the flashlight. Meaning the flashlights throwing power. Turn your garden hose on full power and it may shoot out a few feet, turn the hose on just half way and put your thumb on it, the volume may be less yet it will reach a greater distance.
I like my maglites, esp the one with the led, but for practical purposes the maglite has seen it's peak years ago as they are so large and bulky , now the make a good lil baton.

Good luck with the flash light hunt, I'm fixin to head up to cabelas, they've got a nice looking head mount light for just 30 bucks.

you can upgrade a 2c maglite really cheap
3-surefire batt.
heater hose
1-5d mag star xenon bulb/you can also use radioshack bulb but I can not remember the number

Cut heater hose to fit inside light(shorter than three surefires) and slit one side.Place batteries in hose. Then
bend spring on the end of the cap in just a touch to make contact with surefire batteries. This will overdrive the mag.star bulb and give off a lot of light. Way more than a 120 lumen surefire flashlight with tons more throw.I have a lot of flashlights including surefires and this is my fav. setup. estimated lumens 250

Umm...haven't any of you guys tried Fenix?

Have half a dozen surefires and a few Streamlights (and a slew of maglights that the kids get to use because they won't blind 'em) and the Fenix lights are way, way, way, way superior. They're also about half the cost of Surefire. You can buy right off their website too grin

Regards,
Scott

Quite a few good upgrades.

The Streamlight Super Tac's a nice light for the money too.

Malkoff Devices

I have one in every light I own, the batteries last longer, they are focused, no edge distortion, and are properly heatsinked for longevity.

I would also recommend the Streamlight and the Surefire. I use both, depending on the situation. Every car/truck I own has a Streamlight Stinger and charger in it. $100 bucks well spent!

I recently purchased 2 Coast LED Lenser flashlights off Camofire for less than $30. Both retail for >$80.

They are extremely bright, and put my Maglites to shame.

Streamlight Scorpions are fantastic for the light they offer and size.

Streamlight Stingers are great and cheaper to operate if you use them daily.

Streamlight TL-2's and TL-3's are great lights, and are weapon mountable and removeable...
