I’ve seen more mulies in the mornings; and more whitetails in the evenings. I’d rather hunt a blind in the evening; and spot & stock the mornings. However; I have busted and smoked a muley right at noon. Spotting regularly can help you get in their pattern.

Should have been more thoughtful as you are hunting WMA.

Mornings/Evening is probably not the issue but No it's Never a waste of time and morning allows more time.

I assume you are unfamiliar with this unit, so you need intel on what's going on out there and if you don't have it takes time afield..
Find "Sign", corridors, scrapes, rubs, bedding areas, producing trees (acorns), Anything to start with to familiarize yourself w the area.

Acorns are dropping now, the rut is kicking off here, find a corridor "highway" and setup on it anytime, be patient and realize WMA deer are not deer lease deer.

Also, early season has always been easier for me, not better just easier. Best of Luck!

Alan, what is the difference between "WMA deer and deer lease deer"?

Not completely sure.

My experience is deer remember places to grab a quick snack, especially over years, and definitely as fawns (like me).
It's no different from feed trees, ag crop etc, and the herd behavior also, I suspect access to easy food as fawns is why, yet they don't remember 3 days ago somehow (like me), but let's leave the behavioral science to the biologists.

As I have gotten older I admit if I'm tired, I will sometimes bank some sleep hours in instead of a morning hunt now and then, but I am also retired and can hunt as many days as I want. That said, I have killed more animals in the mornings than in the evenings. Public and private. As for waking at 2 am to drive 2 hours and hunt. I have done it many times, but more often than not I greatly prefer to drive in the day before on a drive like that. You might consider gearing for a throw down camp you can set up quick and sleep comfortably. Which would also be quick to pull back up so you can be mobile. That way you can drive in early the evening before and start the hunt rested and ready to drive home when done hunting.

I think I've killed about the same numbers morning or evening. Some hunts though I've seen nothing in the morning and same zip in evening. My evening hunts, if I see something, I start thinking about tracking and cleaning and might end up not shooting.

Seems like so many factors to consider, pro and con, just go, enjoy the experience. There are so many great things about being outside.

I love morning hunts. Do your scouting. Set up on travel corridors leading in and out of bedding areas.

Be safe everyone!

Of the 50 plus deer I have harvested in my 75 years I'd say 90% were shot in the mourning. But I still love those evening stands and often amazing sunsets that frequently accompany that effort,

Mornings- see more bucks and better bucks in general. Deer are a little more alert.

Evenings- see more deer in general but more does young bucks. Deer are more relaxed (been sleeping all day)

This is a a nation wide GENERAL consensus. But hunt when you can.

I have harvested over 25 deer in my lifetime and I have not been lucky on a morning hunt. All my hunts are evening.
