As for barrel break in, I follow whatever procedure Trash Can Copy and Paste Dan pukes onto the internet. I can't hit a barn from the inside.

Trash Can Copy and Past Dan has argued with many of us for years about barrel break in. He's always gone back to what some barrel manufacturers have printed.

The latest was quoting Cortina saying "he's never seen a difference". I guess now it is true, after all. Since it came from YouTube rolleyes

Here is GA Precisions break in procedure. I followed it because I spent a lot of money on my GA rifle and ld rather follow the advice of a top rifle builder and competitor than dudes on an internet forum grin Did it make any difference? Probably not, but now if it ever takes a dump on me I wont question myself if I should have broken it in.

I understand following their directions, and I can’t say if it’s worth it, because I’ll never know. That’s a lot of cleaning.

Then again my accuracy seems fall apart around 75 rounds and I have to clean so what do I know.

I have found doing the opposite of what he suggests to typically be the best way to do anything related to firearms.

Thanks for the replies. Seems like the whole break-in thing was a trend. I called to see which bore guide size for the action they recommend and that's what they emailed me.

A couple of old bromides......

Sacred cows make the best hamburger, but sometimes the meat can be hard to swallow.

and

Opinions are like noses, everyone has one and many of them smell (polite version)

My bona fides, I've reloaded for over 100 different centerfire cartridges from 17 Ackley Hornet to 475 Turnbull, and have owned well over 200 bolt action rifles (not including semi autos and MSR's)

Am I an expert? If the definition of an expert is "an ex is a has been, and a spurt is a drip under pressure", then I resemble that remark.

Years ago when I was first starting out, I did the barrel break in thingy. Wasted a lot of time.

These days, if I do barrel break in, its 50 or 100 strokes with a bronze bore brush coated with a JB Bore Paste/Kroil mix, followed up by cotton patches to bare metal, then WipeOut/Accelerator to make sure its to bare metal. I then go shoot. If accuracy is acceptable I let it go, and do not clean until accuracy declines noticbly.

IMHO, most rifles are overcleaned.

I see guys at the range that will fire three to 5 shots and clean. They do this over and over and never get the accuracy they expect. IMHO, they do not fire enough rounds down the barrel to "foul it in" for lack of a better term.

ya!

Clean once and shoot a bunch. For my customs with quality barrels (Bartlein, proof, benchmark) I’ve never seen it make a difference and I’ve never bothered with “break in” other than an initial pass of a few patches on a new barrel to remove any potential machining oil and debris.
