Hello everyone. I am seeking help, please. I am taking my son hunting for his first deer youth weekend in the Sam Houston. He will be shooting a doe for his first deer as I was required to (have to put in some work and time and leave bucks for those who have put in the time). I am looking at areas northwest of Lake Conroe and the area around/south of the Big Wood Hunter camp. I am just seeking which area would generally be easier (less dense, etc) for an 8-year-old. We will be using a tripod, and he has shot numerous hogs, 2 turkeys, squirrels, and rabbits. I am not asking for specific spots, but generally, what may be easier for him and give him a better shot of shooting a doe using a tripod (probably make a natural blind)? I have never hunted the Sam Houston but have spent hours and hours e-scouting to find these general areas. We went to the Davy Crockett for youth/adult squirrel weekend, but I found very few signs of deer in the couple of spots we went to, and it was very dense/overgrown. Again, any general help would be appreciated. Thank you

Edit-or any other areas in the state that may be better for youth. Was also looking at Caddo and don’t mind driving.

I certainly wouldn't pass on any legal buck if I was hunting public land in Texas.

I would think hunting from the ground would be a lot easier than trying to haul in a tripod.

Hey. Yeah if a buck walks past he will shoot but we also won’t let a doe walk by for his first deer. Just want him to get one.

As far as tripod-it’s carbon fiber and weighs 4lbs. We will be on the ground. I wish could do a tree stand but don’t have one. So, make a ground brush blind with gun in the tripod if I can find a good same trail or food/bedding area.

North of conroe is burned often enough that you can find areas with decent visibility easy enough. Doubt you will find sign as good as what was in Davy Ctocket IMHO.
