We had a roundsman who chased coons all around named Roger Snow and he drove through town with a mountain lion on the driver's side fender of his old Dodge truck. I was about 10 or 11, that was a great hit in our neighborhood. It was in New Mexico in the late 50's.

More than once I carried them home strapped down bent over the spare tire on the back of my Jeep CJ. It would have been when the evening hunt was the last one of the trip and I needed to hit the road for work the next day. It was not to show them off, I just did not have room in the jeep for them. Very long time ago of course.

Like most I remember the days back in the 60's & 70's when you saw deer on the roof or trunk of the car all of the time during hunting season.

Same here, I brought my first deer home in the trunk of a 73 Dodge Charger. Later on I was hunting with my dad and we brought a 6 point home in the trunk of an Opel Manta. I bought a used Ford F-150 soon after that and brought many a deer home in the bed of that.

Not me. I can remember back in the late 70`s and early 80`s when I was still a pup. You could see lots of deer on trailers and pickup trucks pass thru town on weekends.

Great picture! Any idea where they were hunting?

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Closest I came was the last day I was allowed to hunt and pull my gear off probably the best deer lease I have ever been on in Bandera County. We were loading up feeders, blinds, etc. as ranch was going to be sold in the coming weeks. The ranch had just about every exotic you could imagine seeing in the hill country outside of axis. There was a herd of red deer that I never saw when hunting till that day. A spike was eating in a pasture as we were driving across the ranch and I didn’t waste the opportunity at finally getting one. We had to load him on the toolbox in the bed of my truck and strap him down as there was no other spot to put him. Happiest and saddest moment on that ranch.

If you do it right, and respect a place, leaving for the last time can definitely be emotional.

Probably "way out in the country" north, around Wurzbach and Vance Jackson. Picture was at their house on Palmetto, right outside Fort Sam, now by I35. He later bought 50 acres north of Wurbach, now Mission Trace condos and homes.

How many bird hunters have done this: When I was in high school in 1959 I put my dog in the trunk of the car and tied a beer can near the latch to provide air. Today,I likely would be fined for that.

As a hunter Ed instructor with an awareness of how certain members of our society look for reasons to attack our sport I realize that transporting a deer in this fashion invites hostility and criticism.

I grew up in NJ and hunted with my dad and uncle on my Grandpa's small farm in western NJ.

We were once lucky enough to bag 3 deer on Christmas eve. in 1967. Not having my current enlightenment we neatly mounted those 3 deer on my uncles Chevy impala 2 on the trunk and one on the hood.

As my aunt worked in one of the largest malls in Paramus, North Jersey my uncle insisted that we drive there, get my aunt out of Sears and show her our hunting prowess. With hundreds of shoppers and Santa's rain deer decoration all over we became the object of some extreme condemnation which we quickly realized might make this our last Christmas Holiday.
Needless to say we made a quick brake for it and avoided hitting a number of women in the parking lot who were slamming their Christmas shopping bags on the hood.

When the state started advocating we not transport our deer in this fashion I had first hand knowledge of the potential consequences.

I've never seen a deer strapped to a car, I'm 47. I did get tired of dragging a deer manually and used my wife's (girlfriend at that time) Volvo to get it to the house. I can't remember why I didn't use the tractor. I never thought of it til now but she clearly knew what she was getting into with me.

Somewhere around the late 80's or early 90's we were at the family property in Freestone county for opening weekend, and as most did back then we went to Sam's there at 84 & 45 for dinner Sat night. We pull in and there's a K5 Blazer parked right in front of the doors to the place with an 8 point tied across the hood. Better than that, they had propped the body cavity open with a stick, I guess so they could catch as many bugs as possible. We laughed our butts off, the reaction of some others wasn't as jovial.

Didn't have any choice as I was driving a 65 Plymouth Fury. I was 17 and it was my Mom's car. Boy was she pissed when I pulled into the driveway with my first ever deer a nice 8 point. Dad smiled and patted me on the back.

Have hauled them in the trunk of a 65 Chevelle SS. Back then we would take 2x4s and nail them to a oak tree for steps up to a big limb and nail a 2x6 to that limb to sit on. I do not miss that 2x6 but what we did back then resembled hunting.

I made many "deer stands" just like that one. Great times, really sore butt after an all day sit. up

My best Texas buck came from me sitting on a 2x6 in an Oak tree back around 1978. Wish I still owned that place.

Dad took this one 70 years ago next month. I was only 4 at the time. I have the head mount on the wall of my "cave" and his old .270 in the safe.
