Have seen multiple outlets reporting that Lake City is canceling civilian contracts for consumer sales? Apparently they contribute 30% of civilian 5.56/.223 ammunition into the market?

Was wondering if anyone on here had additional info? The plant makes 7.62 and 5.56 - both popular sizes. Hoping this isn’t leading into a “toilet paper panic” market.

I guess the value of all those 55 FMJs I've hung onto over the years just went up.

Politics...the Government owns Lake City and it's ran by different ammo manufacturers based upon a bid/contract. At least that's the information as I understand it.

Sounds like our government might be ramping up for a war confused2

I will be praying we aren’t getting involved in any other wars.

Unfortunately I might agree with Judd. They are already seeing the demand and lack of reserves for Shells, artillery, missiles etc. if you don’t think they are Planning right now your an idiot. Ammo Inc is shipping pallets and pallets of
Ammo to the front lines in Ukraine.

The lake city plant currently under a Winchester contract will probably be supplying troops in Israel for all we know now.

I’m praying for everyone. The level of war once it becomes WW3 will be something no one wants for them selves, their children, or their grandchildren.

People are losing their minds

Go try to buy LC ammo on several high volume sites and its already out of stock. You might find some as the last shipments trickle in that were already being shipped.

Yeah, a bunch of idiot generals calculated how many 155mm shells we could provide to Ukraine and how many we should hold back for ourselves, based on our usage of said shells in the Iraq/Afgan wars. But our usage in the middle east wars was only in the tens of thousands (the ENTIRE period of the wars) ... we much preferred other things that go boom to artillery shells... we didn't really face an opponent that required heavy use of artillery.

Then suddenly, Ukraine is dropping 6,000 a day and the Russian Federation is dropping as many as 18,000 a day....the battle for Bakhmut was the largest artillery battle since WWII (where a certain infamous battle saw as many as 32,000 shells used every day - hello Stalingrad) and we suddenly realize that in a real war against a real military power that a sh$t ton more artillery is needed/used than when fighting a bunch of dudes with AKs in the sand. Then we go off and start begging Israel and Taiwan to sell us back the 155mm shells we sold them because we realize that we didn't even keep enough for our use... to bring our stockpiles of 155MM shells back up to pre-Ukraine levels, 5 - 7 years of production depending on whether we keep our current production levels or ramp up and max out production level. Over 10 years of production required to replenish our Javelin missile stockpiles - which BTW, we can't even produce ourselves, we rely on 14 other countries that make parts for the Javelin for us...

Every man with a star on his shoulder in DC that had anything to do with that decision should be standing in the unemployment line. Idiots.

But I digress.

On topic, yes, the word on the street is that LC is amping up production for the military and had to cancel civilian contracts. Although, I've seen no direct evidence of this... could just as easily be that they were simply ordered to cancel civilian contracts as some crazy anti-2A move.

Yep - say goodbye to new/brass/american-made .223 ammo for 50c a round.
A 'buck a round' or more will be the 'new normal' once existing stock disappears - which is rapidly happening . . .

Another issue is there was a fire and explosion at a Hornady chemical plant that killed one person and injured 2 others. Its shut for 2-3 months while they investigate. Said to affect primer mix or powder coatings. Add this to the above mentioned issues too.

Adding to it all, Vista sold thier ammo manufacturing to a Czech company. I'm surprised an ammo run hasn't already started.

It has!
Been keeping an eye on online stores - all american-made/brass/ 223 under 50c a round is disappearing quick and sold out many places;
Just got back from my local 'honey-hole' ammo-supply store; the shelves were just about cleared of most centerfire rifle ammo (except the stuff that's already $2 a round and higher.)
Their shelves were FULL a week ago!
Could be perfect storm too - folks getting out and buying their 'hunting season' ammo at same time shortages hit.

Lake City’s Facebook and X feeds posted that:

“Joint Munitions Command has not changed its policy regarding commercial production at Lake City. Lake City has not canceled commercial contracts.”

So, no contracts have been cancelled. It appears that the decrease to the civilian market is due to the normal process of Lake City meeting DOD demands prior to selling the excess to the civilian market. There's simply more demand by DOD due to the wars in Ukraine and Israel and less excess.

Biden wanted to do it, GOP said NO. Rumer will prevail and price will go up.
