Love international travel to many places. Have been to Africa a few times but never wanted to go to Sudan.
To be determined

We sponsored a Sudanese group at our church. Some of the nicest people I've met. Their stories of survival were incredible. Odd thing was they all had perfect teeth.

Yep. The country side is beautiful and mostly undeveloped but it is a hell hole just like every other country in that part of the world. The central government effectively doesn't exist. Everyone thinks of themselves as the tribe they belong to and don't consider themselves Sudanese for the most part. That I recall there are nineteen separate tribes populating the country and three of them are christians while the rest of them are fanatical muslims.
That part of the world has active and inactive volcanos and because of that the water has high levels of naturally occurring fluoride that gives people good teeth. The volcanic soil also makes the coffee that they produce there unbelievably smooth and good. Unfortunately the wars over the past 40 something years has destroyed their coffee production. The people are black but look nothing like black Americans.

^^ This thread was started because of my previous comments about traveling to the Sudan.
You can make all of the jokes that you want but I haven't even been to all 50 states.

Driven through it a couple times, many years ago, on a trip to New Mexico and back..

Yep, on the way to Muleshoe where I was raised.
Actually a couple of years ago also. Went to Lubbock for a funeral and decided to show my wife the farm/ranch where I was raised close to Lariat. I drove through Muleshoe and noticed that the movie house had fallen in and not much town left. Not too unusual for a lot of small West Texas towns. Hadn’t been “home” in about 20 ton30 years.
Got to spend the night in Muleshoe once as a guest of the County for drunk and disorderly. I was about 20 yoa and was more disorderly than drunk. Sheriff came in the next morning, chewed my butt, and turned me loose.

Yep, we used to play the Sudan Hornets in sports when I was in HS. They used to have some good teams in the early 90s.

Sheriff came in the next morning, chewed my butt, and turned me loose. My great granddad and granddad were sheriff in neighboring Cochran county from 1945-1948 and 1948-1972. They seldom carried a gun in those days, different times for sure. Somewhat on topic, the sand blows in both places.

I seriously just wanted more stories. Intrigued. I think he ate some mushrooms, watched Secondhand Lions, and now he thinks it was really him Mushrooms in a salad maybe. I don't use illegal drugs, caffeine is my drug of choice. In that movie they were looking for adventures. By contrast I was doing everything I could to run away from them at first. The big boat in a tiny stock pond in that movie tickled me to death because I can see some redneck doing it.

Who wouldn't be nice after being plucked from that sh--hole of a country and placed within the safe confines of the United States of America?

blkt2, you talked about buying guns while there. Just curious. How did you carry them? How did you get them across the border? Can't imagine they would let you cross a border with them, have them in a refugee camp, or on a military transport. How did you get them from Sudan to home? I'm a long time gun collector with a friend that is an importer who imported individual guns for me going that far back. Don't even try to tell me you mailed them home from Sudan.

Stuck them in a bag and carried them on the plane. No one gave me a second look since I was wearing an Air Force uniform and was not flying commercial. I fit in with the people I was traveling with and didn't look out.of place.
