Been reloading for 35yrs and had my first failure to fire this weekend at the range. Even pulled the hammer back on the Encore and hit it again, nothing. Was dented well the first time, and extra dented the second time. Fired another 15 or so rnds after that without issue.

Winchester Large Rifle primer, out of a batch I've had for several years. Not blaming it on age or even Winchester primers though. I guess if you go thru enough of them you'll eventually find a bad one.

Yes, but majority of my FTF primers have been Winchester.

I’ve only had one FTF on a centerfire cartridge in 40+ years of shooting. Of course, it was while a deer was standing in front of me. Was a factory loaded round (Cor-Bon). As an interesting side note, it was also on a T/C Encore (pistol). I guess if you put enough rounds downrange, the odds of finding a bad one increases.

I think all domestic primers are pretty high quality. An occasional FTF had to be expected once in a great while, but what concerns me more is primer cups that fracture and leak. IIRC, Winchester had a run of some LRPs that exhibited this problem a few years back. As best ad I could tell they stepped up and took care of some damaged bolt faces and replaced product by lot number.

I think I must have experienced FTF at least once and maybe more. I didn't think too much of it considering how many I've used over the years.

I’ve had several now. One back when I was in college a rem sm rifle primer loaded in a 223. Walked up on a good doe and leveled off on her off hand the firing pin hit and nada. Worked another round in and repeated with the normal crack and she fell on the spot. The next SEVERAL have all come out of a few hundred Winchester large rifle primers I bought at academy in the last big ammo craze. I had 2 back to back in a load development session. And another out of the same batch in some ammo I loaded for my brother. I try not to load the rest of them in anything but plinking ammo.

I think I’ve had 2 failures in about 40 years of rolling my own.

Sure it’s GML 425 G. Thankfully I don’t have many left. From the google fu I was able to do they were manufactured in 2013.

I've only had 2 FTF in my life time. This was years ago & both came from the same box of Win .270 factory ammo. Luckily I was at the range. Both rounds got multiple firing-pin taps but they were just plain dead! I've never had a FTF with my handloads with the exception of a pistol that had a faulty firing pin spring. Most of my ammo gets CCI's for sparkplugs.

(BTW: This thread has me thinking about trading off my Win-LRP stash scratch)

I've had or seen ever primer not go off at some point, including Fed 210M. I've loaded millions of rounds of ammo, and at some point, you see all the issues. The only one's that I would say are a noticeable issue are the Win LR and some of the Wolf and Tula SR. I was recently offered to buy over a million Win LR primers at a really good price, and turned the deal down. They chuckled when I told them why I said no (for the same reason I won't use them). I just won't use them any longer.

I also tried to fire them multiple times. With rimfire have had success trying again, but never had a center fire go on a repeat try. I also have a relatively bad taste in my mouth from my experiences with them, but have almost 1000 Winchester sm rifle primers from a different decade I haven’t sampled yet. I’m not in a position to unload primers though so I’ll hope for the best.

Sent a couple boxes of Winchester's new Copper Impact ammo back to them a few months ago after having three misfires from the first few rounds from the first box. They sent me a check a few weeks later. The same rifle has since yet to fail when shooting everything I've loaded into it, even though the misfired shells appeared to show somewhat light strikes.

Yall are living right. Or I am living wrong.

Primers failing to fire is a multiple time a year thing for me. Small rifle, large rifle, and large rifle magnum.

I'm obviously living wrong too, I have at least 2-3 every year, and it always seems to happen when I've got something really good in my sights.

I've only had one in about the 1500ish or so rifle rounds i've loaded. It was on a Wolf pre-primed 223 case.

Thanks. Looks like I don't have any from that lot number.

I am reminded that I did see some FTFs with Wolf primers years ago. I was using them in .223 Rem handloads. It seemed like about 1 in 100 would fail, but the oddity was that they also gave me the best five-shot groups I ever got out of that rifle. Go figure...

In my case I'm sure the difference is the volume of ammo you go thru in a year vs what I shoot. I certainly shoot more than the average hunter does, but I doubt I get any where close to the number of rnds you shoot a yr.

Does the same thing happen in more than one rifle?

You might get some satisfaction from Winchester if you get in touch with them.

I think Winchester will replace what you have if you contact them. It sure sounds like a bad lot, and if it IS then Winchester will know about it.
