My son is 4. Yesterday he came home with homework from his Pre-K class. This struck a nerve with me as I always hated homework in school and felt that the teacher should have better time management skills, if they can fit in the lesson during the time they have, don’t pawn it off in the students & parents during their home time.
I never did homework, I would complete the assignment during what time I had while at school, be it during lunch, before school, another class I didn’t need to pay attention in, or whenever I could find the time, but never outside of school hours. I knew the repercussions, but I still made A’s on tests. If I didn’t make an A, or I knew I didn’t under stand the information the teacher was putting out, then I would do the homework.
Homework is only necessary if the student isn’t understanding the lesson, which would be evident by their grades on the class work the teachers should have them doing. Homework is 1 step before the student goes to tutoring.
Am I wrong?

Homework is just the indoctrination that you should not only work during your scheduled time on the job, but also take it home with you and work more for free.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

It depends on what the homework is. Math, English or the sciences, then yes. Art projects, hard pass.

My oldest is a Sr and the youngest a freshman. I want to say it was when my youngest was in 3rd grade they stopped sending homework. Maybe not stopped completely but was maybe 20 minutes worth. I don't even remember the last time they had to do homework.

What sort of homework? I was about living vs non-living things on the next page, color them, cut them out and glue them in the appropriate columns. Nothing hard, but we had things planned and knew we wouldn’t be home until after his bedtime. I’m not adjusting my schedule because a teacher has poor time management skills. Of course my son thought it was symupee cool to have homework, so that was a battle

Elementary school should be no homework. Kids need time to be kids. This, and when they get to Collage they should be all about learning all they can and leave the game playing behind in Highschool.

Pre-k & Kindergarten homework is absurd. We always had homework from 1ts grade on up. It has been a l very long time but lets say 1st grade you would get homework practicing cursive writing or maybe certain math skills.

I think some homework is ok. As a kid I rarely had homework to do at home because they mostly gave us time to finish it at school if we were responsible enough to do so.
I think homework for pre k kinder etc is BS, on the other hand we always did it with my kids and their teachers always told us it was easy to tell what kids had parents that worked on with/got their kids to do the homework and those that didn’t.
It's hell eatin em live

School is lesson, homework is practice. In college, I would do my homework math problems 3 times. If I worked the math problems 3 times, I would ace the test. Reading assignments, I would read it 3 times. First time highlight in yellow, second time read it and underline key points in red, 3rd time read again before the test, and could just look at the red and know it, ace the test.
So yes, homework, practice practice practice, 3 times is the key. Hope you young guns are taking notes....

I explained this to a teacher in high school when she asked why I never fully completed the homework. I got A’s on her tests, and since her tests were 70% of the overall grade, I didn’t feel it was necessary to complete anymore than what I could compel during her class.
A deal was struck, that if I ever made less than an A on a test, she would give me detention during which time I would have to complete all the homework given during that lesson plan, but my grade wouldn’t change. Worked for me. I’m not saying I never studied for a test, but it was rare and typically during the class before the test.
All papers/essays were done during lunch or during the class that assigned the paper.
I firmly believe that when a kid is home, their time should be spent being a kid and being with family. If the parents elect to put them in sports, band, or whatever extracurricular activities, then that’s on the parents & child. Homework shouldn’t be an “extracurricular”. The kids are in school 40 hours a week, teachers need to do a better job of time management.

The only homework I ever had was when I was 13, my smoking hot 40 year old female teacher would come over and have sex with me. When I was 14, I got tired of her and dumped her for her two twin 20 year old daughters who were also teachers. That was after I climbed Mount Everest backwards but before I killed Hitler who was actually hiding out in a 10 mile deep cave. Fortunately, I can see thermal images with only my eyes.

That’s not true. The twin daughters were at least 22. Don’t embellish your story by under stating the age of the twins.

Well in college, the general rule of thumb 1 hour in class and 2 hours homework (study). But in college, you just have mid -term exam and final exam. Yes, some kids could just go to class and not study and still make good grades, but that is not normal and not expected. Grade school, they give you homework to get you ready for college, but homework in pre k is ridiculous. And it should not be expected that parents have to teach, but home work (studying) is normal way to learn.

I, once upon a time, taught Computer Science courses (part time at night) at Tarrant County College. I was an IT professional during the time that I taught. I looked at the textbook and found some really out of date stuff that hadn’t been used in many years. I went to the head of the Department and told him this stuff was ancient and the students would never use it. I felt that the time could be better spent on other stuff that would better prepare them for a career. He agreed and said it would not be on any tests.
Still trying to figure out why schools teach stuff like how to conjugate verbs(whatever that is). I dang near flunked high school English over that one.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

This thread is sad and also an indication of the nation at large.
Sad that a pre-K kid has homework…that’s just plain weird to me and i think most people….i wouldnt even call a kid in pre-K a student…they are just herding kittens at that age.
The other part…no expectation of homework is just an example of what the US education system has allowed. We dont challenge people to be better. We are complacent to be just good enough and largely teach to the more stupid side rather than the gifted side. We would rather make expectations so low so no one feels left out than reward great intellect by challenging smart gifted students.
India and china individually both have more gifted students than we do students period. Its no wonder our colleges are filled with foreigners. The US has effectively dumbed down our education system to the lowest denominator, and our next several generations will pay the price.
Rant over…

I'm all for homework, but i also think that the kids should be given time to work on it at school. Don't waste the time given and you don't have any homework.

Yea, that is about out of bounds. I say that but they gave us some small pumpkins for the kids to paint by halloween so we have a little time and they are practicing painting at school during that time. It is not a competition but just seeing what they can accomplish. I am not mad at that.
