Have a clients son who I want to buy a shotgun for. He is attending Old Miss and will be hunting in the Mississippi delta for geese and ducks. He is a lefty, 6'4" and 190lbs. My go to waterfowl gun has been a model 12 heavy duck for 30 years and I am clueless about other guns that are suitable for that type of hunting. I would like to keep the price under $2500 out the door.

Does he not already have a shotgun?

Benelli SBE3 has to be one of the most popular. $1800 or so.

I’m cheap so I picked up an SX4 that fits me extremely well and was almost half the price?

He doesn't have a shotgun now and has been borrowing one from a buddy but it is a right-handed gun. The only gun he owns is a lefty A2 style AR that I built for him.

Looked on Bud's site and see a lefty model 400 Beretta but I don't know squat about them.

I re-read your thread. Definitely buy a gas operated gun. The inertia guns kick like he_ _. If his son is young, gas system might be best.

The OP says: "He is attending Old Miss... He is a lefty, 6'4" and 190lbs."

Somehow I'm not thinking that recoil management is the biggest concern for this young man!

I sold a lefty SB2 to buy a lefty SX4. I prefer the softer recoil of a gas gun over the inertia operated. Killed a ton of ducks with the Benelli, and it never missed a lick.

I’m left handed and shoot a LH Benelli M2. Only hunted with it a couple times but I like the gun.

Honestly I don’t believe it’s necessary to shoot a left handed shotgun and shot a RH Beretta A300 outlander for my waterfowl gun for years prior to this. I like the beretta A400 Ultima a lot. The Benelli will kick a little bit more than the gas Beretta.

If he’s waterfowl hunting get him a 12 gauge auto without question. Stick with the 3 B’s; Beretta, Browning or Benelli.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I have an lefty Beretta A400 extreme plus and it's a good one. It has the shims and so forth to fix LOP.

I fully agree with this, I’ve shot the SB3 and A400 extensively and the A400 is more accurate and much much less recoil due to their “kick-off” system. It’s under $2,000 before tax and well worth it.

Can’t go wrong with this advice.

The SIL is a lefty and has a Beretta A400. He loves it, it's a great running gun. His first gun was a Beretta AL390 right handed gun, set up for a lefty. Good gun but he didn't like shells flung in front of his face. Next he bought a left-handed Escort, it did not turn out be be money well spent. He then moved up to the A400. He's had it for 4 or 5 years now. It's been a great gun.

If getting an auto I'd get a Beretta or Benelli if I was left-handed.

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like i'm gonna get him a Beretta A400. Hopefully that will last him long enough to get out of school.

I just with through with this and I'm the same height but add 110 lbs. Go with this in a 28" in one of the duck hunt camos and he will have a do it all gun.

Grab A Gun was the best pricing.

A400 is a great choice, the recoil is better than the SBE due to their kickoff system, I’ve also had friends that have had to shim the SBE barrel to make it shoot accurately. A400 is about as perfect as you can get for a waterfowl gun. Enjoy it!

See sig below.. Pretty much sums it up.

Admittedly so, I am a Benelli fan boy. Don't get me wrong, Berretta makes a great scattergun, that will kick less than a Benelli. But too much maintenance and time consuming cleaning for me.

I'd also be a fool not to recommend Fabarm. Relatively new to the game, but they have raving reviews.

I am about to go look at and probably buy a nib Stoeger Turkey gun later today IF it is not TOO much $'s for the value. JUST FOUND OUT 2 MINUTES AGO the Stoeger shotgun IS TOO MUCH $ FOR MY BUDGET....but s'posed to be 1 HXXX of a shotgun.

Way back when I was repping for the Schoellkopf Warehouse in Carrollton owned by the Chicago based LaSalle St SBIT with warehouses all over the the S'west and far west Mountain West , I was travelling mostly north & east Texas and a couple of another of our in house reps sold the Victoria south & Beaumont east Area, and another guy had Houston & west and all of them alway out sold my unit #'s Remington & Winchester's.

All of my walking quail & dove hunters bird hunters loved the super lightweight Ithaca shotguns in several varieties, as did the Shoot To Retrieve tournament guys. IMO Gotta make a choice depending on the shooter and go from there ....

Cleaning of a gas gun used to be a pain, the new browning and beretta gas guns are a breeze, it can be field stripped and cleaned in less than 5 minutes. Just like anything it comes down to preference, but those are my 2 cents.
