Had two rifles I needed to find a load for. I used the one step on the ladder below where it’s says don’t stand on this step to start my powder charge. First rifle is my switch barrel SA Stiller action. There has been a brand new heavy Remington 24 inch takeoff barrel leaning in the corner of my reloading room for about 2 years or longer. I asked Derrick at Horizon if it could be fitted to my switch barrel just for practicing with. He said maybe but after looking at it said it was doable. Picked it up a week or so ago and tried just some random powders that I had a lot of with the 168gr Sierra MK’s that someone gave me a few thousand of … again just for playing around with type load. I wanted something in the 2650/2700 fps range so not a really hot load. So first two powders shot meh not bad but not really good enough to make me happy and the worrisome part was the ES for both powders was pretty high. So went to 3rd powder and bingo that did the trick. Each of these tests I loaded 9/10 rounds all with 3 time loaded Norma brass. Shot these today right before dusk.

So on to 2nd rifle. This is my Savage PRS rifle that I bought to see if I would like it.. PRS that is. It’s a Savage Elite in a ACC Chassis in 6mm CM and it’s a typical Savage clunky action that shoots so good that you just put up with the clunky hard to run action anyway. Got a 1000 yd 15 round match this next Saturday so plan to use it since it shoots great and there are no time limits really. Since it’s unlimited on cartridges and speed ( mostly see 300 Win Mag 284 Win etc) I planned to use the Hornady 110 ATips I bought a long time for some reason that I don’t remember now. So last night I cleaned the rifle really good and just went with a powder I knew well Reloder 16 and books said 42 ish was max at around 3050 so I wanted to go about 3000 fps so I chose 40.8 and loaded 10 just to see if it would like the 110’s. Seemed to. High shot was clean barrel and then it started to settle down and speed was perfect so I just went straight to 654yds as it was getting late.

Chad one of the powders was the SMP763 as I mentioned to you I wanted to try because of cost and it didn’t shoot bad but my ES was in the 40’s. I was beginning to think at that point that 1 inch or so was as good as I was going to get from the factory barrel. Loaded 30 more with the AR Comp load and next range trip will be a 30 shot group aka the Hornady group. If it will stay around MOA for 30 I will be satisfied for its purpose.

I picked up some of the SMP763 for my 308 also. Haven't tried it yet. Mind telling me what your starting load was with that powder?
