I'll post some pics from our seasons this Fall if you all don't mind.

Started out with archery elk last week. Knew it was early but we usually have way less pressure form other hunters early Sept.
Found some elk - no shots,
missed a couple of bulls at a wallow by a day,
had a bugling bull right behind camp about 500 yds from the tent- wouldn't come in to calls,
and had elk and deer waltz right by the tent the last night.

I had good responses to my bugling, even the spouse had to admit it but just too early and way too warm for good action.
Going back over for a 2 day hunt later in Sept if we can, same spots.

Archery WT hunting Friday and Sat. morning for me this weekend. Not sure if my bucks are still around but we'll see.
Cow elk is also open and have a couple of good cows in the meadows, might try for one of those- we both have tags for cow elk.

Simple / comfy camp and left the spot cleaner than we found it.

Awesome hunting with your trad bow!

Tell us about the misses.....how far of a shot did you get? I'm thinking I may be good to 30 yards on an elk with my trad but but not much further than that.

Sorry, no shots taken.
We had elk bugling about 150 yds out and then again at 200 yds on the wallow.
The bull behind camp crossed our path and went quietly away, the bulls at the wallow did their thing a while then went quiet, we had no way to move in we thought.
Both answered my bugles.

We did find that if you look closely there are game trails around the heaviest deadfall. Even the doghair had game paths through it. Still had plenty of downed timber to deal with though.

We both shoot longbows, made in Muenster, Tx.

sorry i mis-understood the miss as in you missed with an arrow, not missed them being at the wallow!

I've not hunted Wyoming for Elk but have in other states, early season can be tough. Was in New Mexico this time last year and the only bugles we heard were at night. Only saw one bull, a little raghorn. And they kill giant elk on this place.

I wish ya'll the best of luck this upcoming season and please post any kills made with the longbow. Saw a video on FB the other day where a guy called one in and killed him at about 4 yards with a trad bow, it was insane. right place at the right time.

up Thanks for sharing. No better sleep to me than at high altitude in a wall tent listening to elk bugle during the night!

No shots on WT yesterday.
Had a 5 pt bull elk bugling in the meadows all night and through the morning.
Was listening to him behind and above me on a ridge and looked around to see my WT bucks coming in from the wrong side, winded me and left me looking at their flags.
Had a young mule deer doe walk right by at 4 yds, I have a doe tag but will use it on a WT doe, our mule deer population doesn't need any doe taken.

Back up next weekend for WT and maybe cow elk. LO will be up Oct 1 for his elk hunt.
Spouse glassed up several doe groups, mule deer, in the hills. Looking forward to our hunt later in Oct for those.

Glad to hear there are some animals left after last winter.

Nice camp! You know how it's done.

Archery elk is pretty much over for us now.
I will have another chance at WTs with my bow this weekend.
Maybe some cow elk hunting this weekend as well.

Getting things set at the ranch for the LO elk hunt on the Oct 1. Once they leave on about the 5th we have the place to ourselves the rest of the season.
Then we can elk hunt for ourselves and mule deer hunt starting Oct 15. WTs go into Nov but they tend to move downstream towards Wheatland by Nov most years. Hoping at least one buck hangs around into Oct.

That's a nice looking camp! Good luck the rest of the year. I was gonna come for fall bear but the quota filled before I could get there. I'll be back in May to try again.

That's my $.02. Here's you're change!!

Got in a morning sit for WT on the ranch. Made a small ground blind along the creek where they have been crossing.
Well , here come the bucks directly down wind and on my side of the creek, ugh!!
Got spotted, not winded. Had a stomp fest, some blowing then they just ran by and circled back where they came from, the neighbors.
The 4x4, 8 pt , is my target.

One more try on Thursday then on the 6th we get to elk hunt the ranch.

Rifle season opened Sunday for our WT tags.
Mine is for the ranch area and the LO and family are hunting elk right now so I get this coming weekend to start hunting it.
Spouse has a tag for right above town, comes down into town actually but he's hunting public land about 25 min away.
Sunday also opened for rifle elk in both of our areas so he saw elk hunters, heard some bad calling, heard a shot and saw some nice deer tracks. He figures they are muleys and were up at night, moon is crazy bright.

Cold front hitting today with rain/snow and much colder temps for us rest of the week, down into 20's by end of the week. Friday we'll head up to the ranch for some elk and WT hunting and get the bunkhouse squared away for winter.
Spouse still has a pronghorn tag to fill also over the Snowies on Saratoga side.

Wytex - I wanted to say thank you for your help in selecting a unit in Wyoming for antelope hunting this year. I just got back from spending a week hunting Unit 93. Numbers were down in a lot of the unit but I found lots of antelope up by the national forest thanks to a tip from the local game warden. I did see two really nice bucks but they were headed for the next county before I could get on them. Once I found this buck and decided to shoot him, he fought and whipped another buck, milled in and out of his 30 or so ladies for 20-25 minutes, laid down and took a 15 minute nap and finally got up in the clear before I could pull the trigger. I have been saving points for Wyoming for 9 years now. I killed a nice bull elk three years ago and my antelope this year. I think it is going to be awhile before I decide to burn my mule deer points. I saw a few deer in town and one lone doe on BLM land. Last year's winter really did a number on them.

Wyoming is a special place. I would hunt there every year if I could.

Happy tp hear you had a good time and great hunt.
I would hold those PP for deer a few more years, maybe.
Deer numbers are down but ion some areas doing ok. Hoping for a good winter and good fawn recruitment this year.

Don't forget we have reduced cow elk tags too, for a time filler hunt.

LO is through with their family hunt.
Sounds like they got this 6 pt bull we had on cam below the house on the creek crossing, he was all over the hay meadows too.
They also took 3 cow elk.

Now the ranch is ours for the rest of Fall and winter trapping.
Going up in the morning to square away the bunkhouse for winter and do some hunting.

Doubting my little WT buck is still around, they have dogs they take up and they are not as low impact as the 2 of us when there.
Hoping to get a cow elk down this weekend at least but we'll see.

Back from the ranch.
Found some elk.
I took a nice cow Saturday and the spouse took a spike this morning.
Found a good 6 pt but they gave us the slip.

Back up next weekend for opening of deer season, mule deer.

Elk pics here and I'll post some more pics Monday or so.
