OK I have a few questions last weekend and this weekend I went out to a buddies place in Itasca and had some pretty good luck on blue wing Teal.
I’m New to Duck hunting This was like my fourth time to ever go duckhunting however, I’m not new to wing hunting as on a regular basis during season I take my dog quail hunting.
Of course it’s teal season as you guys already know the question I have today is
I’m looking at getting into duck hunting as this is a blast!!!!!
Decoys
My female cousin gave me a bag of decoys 3 years ago, which have been sitting in two bags in my garage ( they belonged to her ex husband who left them behind after a Divorce )

This morning I went out in the garage and went through the bags and inside the bags I got

Mallard ( 8 Drake/ 4 Hen …. Final approach decoys.

Green wing teal Winter plumage ( 12 total )
6 drake / 6 Hens
Final approach decoys

Pintail ( 8 Drake / 4 Hens
Avian X decoys
( not exactly sure why he switched brands but whatever )

I was just wondering, as I have done some research these, of course are puddle ducks
I’m not sure if I need to or not that’s for you guys to answer however
If I were to add another species or two of ducks
Which one or two would you add?

I’ve had someone tell me get a few gadwall or a few Wigeons to add some color.

By the way, I live in Weatherford
However, I have Property around Breckenridge area that I hunt on.
I do know there are ducks on it mid December I just never hunted as It never drew interest.
The only species I remember last January were green wing.
I also have access to a place in Olney area that my mother and father-in-law own and it’s more flat less elevation and it has ducks on it on a regular basis from December through March.

Look forward to hearing everyone’s opinion

Thanks

Use what you have. No need to mix it all up. Used to only use mallard decoys back 20 years ago and killed every kind of duck we had including divers. Don’t over think it. Where we hunt now is mainly Gadwall so we run Gadwall decoys. But we could shoot them over the mallard decoys we have as well.

Maybe a spinner or motion for calm days. Not really necessary, but could help. If you know how to call, work on that just don’t over do it when hunting. We are not far from you in Elbert, duck hunt after deer season.

In the part of texas you are hunting Gadwall and Widgeon would fit in with your puddle ducks.
