I use a Stevens 315 as a backup and enjoy it. Sometimes I'll grad it over the 1100.

Go to an ol' line gun store like Nagels in San Antonio or maybe McBrides in Austin (you get the idea). As people navigate to the newer models, you will find lots of good used guns to choose from and there should be some in your price range. That's how I obtained my Beretta SXS and I lovey it. Got a brand new Benelli 828U and still haven't popped a shell into it.

As far as how do they shoot, consider practicing with one after you buy it.
