Just got notified today that I got drawn on the secondary draw for early FEB for the North Unit. Never been to the place. Anybody got any info or tips? Long ways from Amarillo to there so I'm trying to frontload some intel.

Congratulations on the draw. I have hunted the Daughtrey/Choke Canyon for Javelina before. It should be a fun and successful hunt. The biggest pointer I can give you is to not scrimp on the corn. During the orientation they will give you pointers where to hunt based on your compartment. You may want to make your reservation at Choke Canyon State park if you want to stay in a cabin.

Definitely, bring lots of corn. Bring about six 50# bags of corn with you. Pour a small trail of corn all down the roads or senderos and you can just walk the roads afterwards and sneak up on those suckers! They LOVE corn!

i read on several of the postings that corn you bring must be labeled for alphatoxin.....i have to say i don't find that labeling on much of the corn i buy. but i'm getting just regular stuff from feed stores or HEB. is this something particular i need to be looking for?

Corn from HEB or any feed stores should be just fine.

I’d be hesitant about it if it doesn’t list the ppb aflatoxin on the white tag or on the bag itself.
Check the white tag or the label for it.

Only giving you my recent state Park experience. (South llano state park) The park staff was very particular about the ppb aflatoxin requirements and checked every bag the hunters brought. If the parts per billion (ppl) wasn’t marked on the bag, you couldn’t use it. Also couldn’t use it if the bag had been previously opened prior to the hunt.

Remove All doubt and make sure you get stuff that complies…

I had corn last year from the Mill in Gonzales and it did not say anywhere on the bag that it was Aflatoxin free, but it did say DEER CORN on the front.
The folks at Gus Engeling said if it said Deer corn on the bag that it should be aflatoxin free and was allowed to take it on the youth hunt there.
I am sure each area has different regulations. Like YakBlue said be sure and call the unit first and good luck.

Hunting the North Shore may not require as much corn. 2 bags might be plenty. I don't think the compartments in that unit have as many roads or senderos as the James Daughtrey units.

You should be able to get a compartment map if you call.

I hunted James Daughtrey last year and he mentioned we had to use corn that met their "requirements", but he didn't look at our bags. At least you have plenty of time to find the corn they want you to use.

i'll have to start paying more attention to that. if we get picked it'd be a real bummer to show up with something i couldn't use.
