Can anyone recommend a source for a quality pedestal mount base? I’m considering having my cape buffao taxi done in Namibia, but I’d still need a pedestal base for the mount. I’m hesitant to have everything done here due to limited local experience, delivery time, and possibly cost. Am I wrong in these assumptions?

I'm certain there are several taxidermists in the DFW area with tons of African game experience. The numbers of Texans that go to southern Africa to hunt every year are staggering. I've killed 3 cape and had 2 shoulder mounts done, both here in Texas. Couldn't be happier. One by Woodbury's (Kerrville), one by Huffaker (now retired).

I’ve gotten one from here. Was pretty reasonably priced for the size. Shipping wasn’t too terrible either.

Don’t have anything mounted over there.

Ship it back here and have it done.

They don’t have the materials nor the skilled labor that we do here.

I’ve been to Africa, seen their work and the work done here and ours is noticeably better.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

+1

There is no comparison....the average taxidermist in Texas will be far better than the average taxidermist in Africa. I know there are a couple higher end taxidermists in Africa, but most of them do not produce what I consider quality work. I've seen hundreds of mounts that guys got done in Africa and most of them look pretty rough.

I got all of the animals from my trip skull mounted in Africa last year, but I would not even consider doing shoulder mounts there.

There’s one exception if you are in the cape, Splitting Image in Port Elizabeth does great work and they are great people. They have reps in the states too.

They also have great pedestals.

Splitting Image is the only African taxidermy shop that I've seen lots of work from, that actually does compare with the good taxidermists in the states. They seem to do very good work.

I made my own pedestal for my wife's and my 2017 CO mule deer. I have never been labeled a "skilled carpenter" and managed to put it together in a couple of afternoons. I did the taxidermy as well, but that took a whole lot longer!

Double Nickel Taxidermy in New Braunfels sells pedestals. They do a lot of African taxidermy as well. Brother and I had Nilgai done there and were very happy with the end product.

I have this larger pedestal left over from a project. It should be capable of holding a buff. Dim 29" H x 22"x 22" with a removeable top. The Africa cut out currently is backed with OSB but it's meant to have a animal hide placed there, OR the OSB can be removed with a hollow cut out left.

Cedar creek taxidermy, Breckinridge Texas . He does everything and his work is Amazing. Sam is the owner. Every time I go in there I am amazed Giraffes , monkeys, impalas. He has done most of my whitetail. Have never had a complaint.

Maybe. Ive had two hides ruined in the dip and pack process but you won’t know that until your tanner tries to tan them. If they are mounted there your hides don’t have to be dipped so they go from salt to tan. The quality of the mount itself may or may not be what your taxi will do but your taxi can’t mount a hide that’s been burned in dipping anyway.

Nice work! That looks like it's worth more than I can afford but I'm curious what you want for it.
