I got out with two good friends for a quick early morning hunt. Weather was nice and nobody even broke a sweat. The birds were flying high. Everyone shot pretty well and us old guys scratched 31 birds while it was still nice and cool. I took the old Pudelpointer. Missus Smokey just got back from the store with thick cut bacon, jalapeños, and cream cheese…

He is only 7 years old but he is a high mileage 7 year old. I picked him up at 7 weeks old on Labor Day weekend in 2016. I have hunted him over 60 days/year (mostly upland birds) every season since. He has hunted the hair off his face, feet, and belly so many times it comes back mostly white now. But yes, lots of seasoning…

Our dogs about the same age, Tara was born Aug 3, 2016.

Cooked some dove up with a few steaks. Seasoned the steaks with some brisket rub, and seasoned the dove with Meat Church Texas Sugar BBQ Rub. Cooked over charcoal. Came out great.

I had a short window to get out this afternoon and take a crack at the dove. Hunted a different place today. Field is around 120 acres. Got there around 6 pm. The morning doves were flying into the goat weed pretty good. Not a puff of wind and 101°. It was hot. With nobody else hunting them though, maybe they will stick around till next weekend and I can take another crack at them. Teal opens next weekend. Low water has the alligators bunched up right now . Where I have been seeing the teal in numbers reminds me of how I picture crocodiles on the Nile. I may keep dove hunting a little longer till it cools down and I am more comfortable with putting my dogs in the marsh.

I remember meeting you and Tara for a de-snaking clinic at Stinkbelly’s when both of our dogs were young. Tara appears to be aging pretty well.

Quick hunt this morning. Windy so not a ton flying but still had a few. Millie is loving it she’s having a great time.
