I totally like the idea of using a military surplus firearm for deer hunting. I was thinking about a Swiss K31 for their reputation, but I currently have a Remington Model 700. I don’t see a lot of deer, so every moment counts. What would people do? I did see a cool video on this topic:

Why does he keep lifting his head after every shot? That and he's a terrible shot. I could see him jerking with the 700...almost like he was trying to shoot terribly. Either rifle can be accurate and effective. I don't see a straight pull as having any inherent advantage. Shoot what you think is cool. I'd go with the Remington.

My K31 with the Swiss Products scope mount has done well on hogs out close to 300 yards. It would be quite a bit heavier than the 700 but not an issue for stand hunting. 7.5x55 PPU soft points are plenty capable. I take a lot of milsurps hunting, various Mausers, Mosin, K31, SKS but mainly to where I am stand hunting and weight isn't an issue and neither is damaging a piece of history. So I guess I'd say if you're stand hunting and it's unlikely you'll scratch it up, take a Swiss Products scoped K31.
