The first rifle I bought was a Marlin 30-30 from Gibsons in Oak Cliff for $74.95 in 1965. I was 16 yrs. old.

There is certain nostalgia feelings people get from looking at pics of when they were kids.

But were they really the good old days? Or was it just easier for you as a kid then to live a carefree life?

Lots of stuff has gone on between then and now, and yes times are changing, but here in the US of Texas, is it really that bad?

I have come to realize the carefree no responsibility times of my youth were great times, for sure, but so are the current times. There was unrest then, there is unrest now, politics was crazy as ever then and is crazy as ever now, but life is pretty dang easy these days compared to then.

This is getting way off topic, but one simple explanation is parents who didn't parent and instead coddled their kids, resulting in new parents who didn't know how to parent who because they (parent) was coddled couldn't let little johnny or janey lose or be left out, creating anxiety in children because they know no hard boundaries and have no structure.

Another simple solution is mental illness was always there but it just wasn't diagnosed and instead you had people who everyone knew were weird and to be avoided but with no "reason" why...we all knew them, we all had them in our classes. To say mental illness is up so much now vs then is a chicken vs egg thing, is it just diagnostics or is it real illness...make a guess and you are probably right. At worst you will be right for yourself, since no answer will ever be known.

Another simple answer is mental illness is a product of having an easy life....when life is hard people have to survive and mental illness stays tucked away or the mentally ill just simply die. Maybe life is so good we are allowing mental illness to flourish....a simple product of affluency.

I can go on if you want. none can be proven. But all are probably partly correct...hard to prove anything when it comes to mental illness

Is mental illness in today's youth the result of peer pressure?

You telling le there was no peer pressure back in the day?

I would say it is peer pressure taken to the extreme by fragile kids that have never been allowed to deal with failure or stress by coddling parents…i would go with that yeah…among other things

no, coddling.

Why are peanut allergies more prevalent as a % today then when we grew up? Simple we coddle it now meaning we are overly cautions, so we ban/remove all peanuts forums from schools. Now our kids have very, very little exposure. No exposure in micro dosages means more allergies.

Kids are so coddled now they cant self solve differences or work through adversity. They are taught that there is a safe place from uncomfortable. My daughter tried to pull that with her mom the other night. She was getting a lecture for being mean to her sister. … “Mom stop you are words are making me uncomfortable….”

Norman-Ford made scopes in Tyler,Texas back in the 50's and 60's. They was high dollar at the time. I have one on a Savage 99 and it still holds zero.

Did they have "counter checks" in Dallas or any other big city back in the "good ole days?" These were on the counter of the local grocery stores, convenience stores, gas stations, etc.

Notice there is no account number or customer name & address. Some person in the bank had to ID some wild signatures and know who that check was for.

Haha.............I remember the sideburns (big, Elvis Presley...kinda sideburns).

I had to dig back for some old photos when I was 17 yrs. old (circa 1971). Had to have 'sideburns' back then.

Agree with the above.....but I would submit it WAS a 'simpler less complicated' time to live in the U.S.

Don't fool yourself with the number. Guns today are cheaper than they ever have been when you adjust for inflation. The guns haven't got more expensive, the dollar has just lost value.

I had big sideburns in the 70’s too. Never was into the long hair, platform shoes, or bell bottom jeans though. I could still grow those sideburns today… but they’d be grey!
