It's amazing what some improved range conditions and more consistent feeding can do for a deer. After last season my hunting partner moved, which has allowed him to get to the ranch more consistently to keep feeders full of protien/corn mix all spring. We have a ot of pictures of this deer from last year, and he was easy to identify due to the notch in his ear. He wasn't anything special so he got a pass, with the plan to cull him this year if he didn't see improvement. Well, needless to say, he has our attention this year. Now we just need him to go to his own corner of the ranch and not get in any fights, and start showing up in the daylight

So is the change most likely injury related?

To the OP: Don't discount the benefit of effective rain this spring and early summer.
Last year was a good drought year for most of texas. This year we saw great timely rains thru most of spring and into early summer.

Good range conditions will trump good feed every time. Feeding really contributes during the stressed times (drought, dead fo winter, etc).

Cool looking buck!
I hope you guys can drop him and get hands on.
