I said rocks, Sotol, Ocotillo, Tasahilla and Prickly Pear from Sanderson.

She wasn't having it.

I agree with you. Not the prickly pear, but everything else. Low maint and no watering.

Just as well, Ocotillo is very finicky anywhere but out there. 'Place looks nice. I'd say roses from the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham, but the deer might do a number on them.

She has big plans every year and in the end if I don’t water it, it don’t make it.

And I ain’t killed the rocks or Lantanas yet…

We’ve talked about bag worms…they will destroy a rose bush. My experience, they are a PIA.

I’d just do rocks lol

Plastic and rock for sure. We have pots on top with nice flowers and lemon grass all over.

How much sun does it get?
Hastas are good, and Lantana... might even put some dwarf crepe myrtle. If they get sufficient sunlight, Midnight Marvel hibiscus plants are great and she'll love the blooms. Oh and Dusty Millers would do well, too.

Texas sage would be another good choice as long as it gets plenty of sun. It's very low maintenance as well.

We’ve had good luck with rosemary and knockout roses

I would do some sort of plastic weed barrier, rock, a few decorative grasses, and a half dozen pots for flowers.

That faces West correct? If that is the case you’ve got a battle. I’d say rocks or cactus. The heat radiating off the house and the sun all afternoon will burn up most things people would plant.

If I’m remembering wrong anything goes. My wife loves her flower beds, but I hate them. Fortunately for her I love my wife. Like you said, she’s not having it. We go buy more plants for her kill regularly.

Only a fool would own 70 acres and make the house face west.

That's the south side of the house.

April though September the eave shades the south wall. June 21 is the day the sun is the most vertical in the sky, for most of the day. So the shade line extends south, of the south wall, onto the ground 3 feet.

Then Hostas and hydrangeas would be my suggestion. They'll do well in the shade.
