My electricity contract expires 8/15. Anyone made the change lately and which comparison site did you like best? Also, I don't really want to go the Energy Ogre route. I want a three year fixed plan and put this in the rearview mirror again.

We had been with TXU for al long time, the wife was very reluctant to change but finally had enough paying a premium for the name and just switched to Champion

I change at the end of every contract. I spend about an hour of research, my last year of bills in front of me and Power to Choose on the computer. I have been though 6 provides in the last 10 years. For some reason, no company will ever offer a good enough rate to keep you as a customer....their rates always go up the next year.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

I've used Stream, Green Mountain, and TXU (currently). Have never really had issues with any of them....in reality, they really don't do anything but billing.
I just go with whoever has the best deal.

Ever since deregulation started I have switched many times. Of all the companies to choose from five years ago it was Green Mountain at 10 cents for a 60 month lock. That ends next month. Now it is looking like 36 months is about the longest lock I can find.
I have used Power to Choose or any number of their competitors that call themselves about the same name. The sorting process should be easier, but no, you almost have to be a lawyer/accountant to get through all of the fine print.
This morning a company called Ohm Connect said that with my typical usage of 1,300 or so kwh per month that I would land between 12.2 & 12.3 cents. I still have a couple of weeks or so to try to whittle it down some more if I want.

This is an extremely easy process, takes a few minutes total to figure out, not sure why so many people find it so difficult and pay Energy Ore to do it.
First, Oncor in most cases deliver the power, who you chose just handles billing and have nothing to do with the actual power delivered to your home.
Go to Powertochoose.org first. Make sure its .org and not something else, enter your zip code and look at the list of providers, the cheapest ones will be listed first. Pick the cheapest for the number of months you want and click the sign up button. Thats pretty much it.
FYI in Sulpher Springs the cheapest rate looks to be 11.2 KW for about 2000 Kw of usage per month.

For some reason, no company will ever offer a good enough rate to keep you as a customer....their rates always go up the next year. That's essentially the 'game' - they're counting on most of the public being too lazy to switch billing co (your actual provider will be the same regardless of who you send the payment to). Same with insurance co's these days . . ..

www.powertochoose.com No fee from them. Lots of options. I just changed to a 12 month contract at 10 cents per KWH total. It was with Frontier

For some reason, no company will ever offer a good enough rate to keep you as a customer....their rates always go up the next year. Yep, went through that with Reliant. About 3 months before contract expiration they sent me a price that was not competitive. It was good for a month. They were just hoping I would bite. Next came a lower offer 1-1/2 months prior to expiration and still not competitive. Then I called and got it lowered slightly but still too high. Lots of companies will lock in new customers 30 to 60 days before service starts so I signed up in early thinking prices would go up in summer. When Reliant sent the last offer I used the postage paid envelope and sent it back with a note asking why they treated new customers better then existing. I know the reason and did not expect and honest answer but it felt good.

I want a three year fixed plan and put this in the rearview mirror again. I strategically had short term plans going back to last September when my 8.1¢ /kwh plan ended. I read that rates would be lower throughout this past winter and early spring. And those projections proved to be true. In May, I used powertochoose.org and locked in 10.4¢ for 36 months. And my timing was good- I just checked the current lowest price for 36 months and it is 11.7¢. with most other over 12¢. Like you're alluding to, I see no value from Energy Ogre when you can use powertochoose.org for free. I switch providers every single time my contracts are up and have never had an issue with any of them. All they do is send you bills, they have nothing to do with the actual delivery of power.

They took 2 cents off their published rate for me and got in line with the cheapest providers in my area.

However, I could not understand one word of the reps attempt at English, and politely told him that. I still have time and plan to call back however many times it takes to get an English speaking rep. It could save time and auto-billing changes, etc. vs. switching companies. Green Mountain Energy: I have made a few customer service calls over the years, all good experiences and good help. The funny thing is they always ask if I'm proud to be utilizing renewable energy. I tell them the same thing every time. "I don't care if you are burning tires in a power plant! I just want the cheapest electricity I can get!!"

We had been with TXU for al long time, the wife was very reluctant to change but finally had enough paying a premium for the name and just switched to Champion I have the same problem here. she doesn't want to change. My wife held me up from switching for years. She thought it would effect our service. Finally convinced her that it only changed who sent us a bill. Have paid much less for years since. I'm a year into a three year contract with Discount Power at $.10 per KWH. My problem is the same as yours - it's hard to get a good rate in the summer time. I think I will break my contract either this April or next if the rates make sense. JR

But yes, as long as you pay your bill, there it does not matter at all who your actual provider is. Just go for the cheapest one that suits your timeline.

I also don't see any value to Ogre. Using PowertoChoose.org is easy. I look at the facts sheet and pay attention to the energy charge and base charge when comparing companies. Switching companies is easy. I picked one and called to lock in price 45 days prior to contract expiring. There are some plans out there that pay a $100 bill credit when usage is between 1000 and 2000 kwh that might work for some people. I ran numbers on them and they did not work for me.

Power to Choose has always done well for me. Every time I have tried, Ogre has always been more expensive than my own selection. I am paying $0.10 now, but that 5-year deal expires in February. Hoping I can get a new rate lock in the $0.115 range when the time comes. My peak highs are 2500 kWh and lows are 1000 kWh.

I took a 39 month deal with OnPoint for 11.9 cents. I thought the 39 vs. 36 month sounded strange, but whatever. I though the bailout was cheap at $99 if rates happen to go down.
A guy with Green Mountain actually told me I was falling for a trap, that after three months the rate would go up. What a crock....
