My friend returned from there recently after hunting birds and big game. He said power was on about 12 hours a day. The country is in bad shape politically and economically according to him. Joberg is a zoo.

Maybe going the way of Rhodesia. That was ugly.

The outages have been going on for well over a year. The chickens are coming home to roost.

Carter helped Rhodesia's demise.

Ignoring reality is usually painful, a lesson we could learn here.

People used to visit Rhodesia to view the ruins of Zimbabwe. Now they visit Zimbabwe to view the ruins of Rhodesia.

They were having planned outages 5 or 6 hours a day when I was in South Africa in 2021. It was a pain in the butt but it was planned and you just had to work around it.

I hunted there this week. We had a 2 hour rolling blackout every day. The government posts a schedule ahead of time so everyone knows what time to expect it. They have just gotten used to it…..

Now the streets are blowing up. >>gas? explosion

I doubt any infrastructure is actually maintained in any meaningful way. Sad.

South Africa faces ‘civil war’ conditions due to possibility of power grid collapse

Quote
South Africa is on the verge of “collapse” amid rolling blackouts and warnings a total power grid failure could lead to mass rioting on the scale of a “civil war”.

Western embassies including the United States and Australia have advised their citizens in the country to stock up on “several days’ worth” of food and water and be on high alert during extended blackouts sweeping the country. New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises “exercise extreme caution” due to strikes and demonstrations. “There have been outbreaks of violence primarily directed toward refugees and other African migrants throughout South Africa. Violence could occur again at short notice and bystanders could be caught up.”

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national “state of disaster” on February 9 in response to the record electricity shortage, which has seen state-owned power company Eskom institute rolling blackouts – dubbed “load shedding” – lasting up to 12 hours in some cases......

The phrase "Be careful what you wish for" comes to mind; for Zim too.

My wife and I went to SA in 2012 and I flew through Joberg to get to Zim in 2014. Major changes in that amount of time and my friends over there keep me updated as they can. Many of the farms we hunted in SA have been looted and the owners kicked out at gunpoint. Rinse and repeat of Rhodesia.

I could tell stories for days about Zim and the natural resources and giant dilapidated grain infrastructure, but the worst thing to see was all the Chinese flags.

I leave next Thursday for Tanzania. I hope it isn’t next, but we’ll see.

Have a good hunt. up Every time I go to Africa, I realize more how I will never really know or understand it. We're just visitors, but travel is beneficial in that way.
