Got a report a few weeks ago from two gentlemen who have 50 years or more on the ground I hunt. They said it's has never looked this good in June. Then reports from the research ranch about finding a lot of nests successfully hatched. Thirteen inches of rain in 3 weeks in June. Now low rain forecasts and hot weather. Now I think cover and bugs will get the birds thru but got to admit I'm a little nervous.

It’s always a gamble with quail leases.

Looking good in Dickens. I agree, I think the cover and food sources will get us through.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Agree Chet. We have had this before, super wet late May + Junes followed by scorching July and August and it definitely curtails chick survival. If we can just get a third of an inch every two weeks or so, which brings respite from the heat for several days, that is usually the difference maker for the boom years. Just about forgotten what a 15+ covey day feels like in nice rolling, more open, mostly snake free terrain that is not a high of 76 degrees...ready.

Back in the days….this heat is rough. I really think having 3 to 7 racoons at 5 different feeders is hurting quail. 30, 40, years ago, there were never this many coons. AND PIGS Think how many nests are being destroyed along the creeks.

Do we have more racoons on feeders or do we just see racoons more because of all the cameras? The pigs I am 100% in agreement with. They are a new comer, but I see fewer javelina than I used to. I never saw a wild turkey growing up south of San Antonio, now they are plenty.
We all need to practice Whoa more.

Could be both, cameras and coons, although I can remember many a night hunt with great coon dogs, and only come back with 2. And that was covering a ton of acres.

Quail are near the bottom of the food chain coons coyotes, fox skunks possums hawks hogs like quail for dinner. The heat is absolutely horrible ! Everything is going downhill except for cover. Still hopeful but a banner year in rolling planes is decreasing but I still believe it wii be an improvement. 107 in jayton

At my place in Dickens doing some upkeep and I am really optimistic. This year we have received 16" of rain most in the last 3.5 months. Cover is amazing and I'm hearing quail all over my 160 acres, Last year was a catastrophe but maybe we'll recover some this year.
