My uncle is the “Gumbo King” as many fans have dubbed him. He works at the Carencro location.

Another vote for Prejean's. It is a "sit down" take your wife to- kind of place and very good. If you are by yourself you might want to get on I-10 and drive a little farther east 5-10 minutes to Beaux Bridge and go to Poche's. They have the best Boudin of anyone and they also have regular meals you order at the counter and take to the back room. This back room is inside picnic benches in a large room with about a 100 deer heads on the wall- you'll like it. No matter what you get, buy at least one Boudin.

Find a Billy’s

Fezzos is so much better than Prejeans. Prejeans used to be the place to go but has gone way downhill. T coons for breakfast. Bon temps grill is a good place also.

Lafayette is where I'm from. Fezzo's and Prejeans are both good. I was going to suggest Poche's. My cousin owns the place. Their plate lunches are really good and bring a cooler to bring some stuffed pork chops, pork roasts, and chickens home. Their boudin is good, but I like Best Stop better. NuNu's is a close second.

Almost worth the drive from Tyler.

Will have to try Lafayette location sometime. I ate at Drago's in New Orleans last July and was pretty disappointed.

Best Stop & Billy's is great but man I love me some NuNu's (Youngsville, not Broussard).

I get down on chargrilled oysters

I am NOT a native to Lafayette or LA in general. Just spent chunks of time there over the past 15yrs working in the offshore oil game. People out of LA i think often list New Orleans as THE place to eat in Louisiana. I get it BUT I highly prefer Lafayette as a city. When I pass through the state to Mississippi or Alabama, i prefer to drive around New Orleans and stop in Lafayette.

Some of my favorites are:

kinda pricey (but I usually expense this meal) but i think well worth it based on quality overall. There is a specific dish there called the twice fried duck. that thing is stupid good to me. Has a sticky, sweet sauce with a hint of fish suace and chillis. crispy, salty, slightly sweet, a little spicy and delicious.

This place is also pricey but generally not great. Zea's is overall better food for the price. BUT there is just a dish called the Cajun Eggs Benedict. I love dishes that are both familiar and yet new/novel. That's the way i felt about the Cajun Benedict. Btw, I still LOVE the classic Eggs Benedict.

Apparently they aint even got a website. Just a Facebook page. First of all, this is the type of place one think's of when you ask a local for their secret, non-tourist hot spot. Absolutely loved almost everything i tried. In true to south Louisiana style (which I adore), they have like cafeteria setup where they vary the meat sides a bit for a set box lunch. Usually involving a rice and bean of some sort.
I aint really eaten a turkey wing before and certainly aint never heard of a Stuffed Smoked Turjey wing before. My gosh that this is the proverbial slap-your-mama good.

The thing about Drago's , the chargrilled oysters are the best ever , but the rest of the menu is just average.

That's all I've eaten there and was disappointed, Maybe caught them on a bad day. Had WAY better chargrilled oysters here at the house on Thanksgiving, cooked by my nephew. I'll try them again though. Lots of others are damn good too.

The Fleur De Lis shrimp are pretty good too

I live an hour from Lafayette. Prejeans is now a highly overrated tourist trap. The food is not nearly as good as in the past.

T-Coons is excellent for breakfast and lunch. The portions are huge. They serve the classics like crawfish etouffee, shrimp creole, and sauce picante along with diner classics like hamburger steaks and meatloaf. They also serve “rice and gravy” which is cajun for meat smothered down in a gravy that is tender and delicious. It may be beef, chicken, or pork. The menu changes daily.

Fezzo’s is always consistently good.

If you were going to drive to Prejeans then take the time to drive to either The Steamboat Warehouse Restaurant in Washington, Cafe Josephine in Sunset, or Little Big Cup in Arnouldville. They are all much better.

If you want a drive go to Suire’s Grocery just south of Kaplan. Suire’s is located in an old cajun store. Suire’s has been featured in the New York Times several times. Get the shrimp dinner, turtle sauce picante, gumbo, etc. and save room for their homemade desserts like fig cake made fresh daily from old family recipes. Trust me on this. An added bonus is that their Philly is one of the best you will get anywhere including Philly.

As for boudin and cracklins, try regular boudin and smoked boudin. The Best Stop, Kartchners, Billys, etc. are all good. Its like Ford vs Chevy. Everybody has their favorite.
