Trying to get set up for first season hunting, public land (far walks), tree saddle, bow hunting for white tail. Want to make sure to be warm, but don’t want to be in a tree sauna! Pretty warm natured. I know we don’t get too many teens, at least in NE Texas. Maybe for a day or two. I think most of the season will average from 30’s-50’s. Was thinking a good merino layer, and maybe a set if FL catalyst bib/jacket. Just curious how y’all dress for the mid to later season, and if the FL catalyst will be too not or not warm enough.

Most will tell you it doesn’t get cold in Texas but I get real cold from time to time(cold natured). Not sure how experienced you are but walking and then sitting is the worst combo to dress/prepare for. Lots to factor in on that and how long you sit to factor in also. Definitely put a plan together that allows you to carry some clothes in, then put on later and the reverse when walk again(assuming you walking like you said). To me, dressing for the elements is one of the more important considerations about hunting and too much for me to go into now. You should get some good comments.

I've had a goose down jacket for 30 years now that is awesome. Light weight and doesn't take up much space in the backpack. A fleece gator, beanie and some good gloves are also in my pack all the time. For me if it's 30-50 degrees I'll wear thermal underwear and pants and a hoodie walking in or out. Under 30 I pack a pair of coveralls to put on while on stand. I pack water, snacks and red bull most hunts too.

I have learned over many years of hunting in different climates ........................ You can always take clothes off if you get hot but if you get cold and do not have the extra clothes to put on then you can be miserable --- and Freerange is right - if you are on a "walking hunt" layering clothes is the secret IMO - you can use your clothes the same as a thermostat -

October hunting I wear a pair of guide pants and whatever shirt I can find…usually a cotton T-shirt or a poly fabric blend. I will carry a hoodie or pullover in my backpack for once I get on stand of needed, but October bow season is typically pretty warm

I’ve hunted central Texas in everything from shorts and a tshirt to triple layers and a parka. I don’t park too close to my blind so my walks in are 1/2 mile or so, typically. In mid-late season I usually have a heavy base layer under a standard camo top/bottom, and use my coat as the control. Warmer day, light jacket; colder day or hunting in wind, heavy coat. Either choice can be unzipped for ventilation.

Agree with all the above, layering will be key and preventing sweating on the way in will be a huge part of staying warm on those colder days. A good base and pair of pants and a good base and mid layer to walk in with will be good. With an extra layer to put on top once you get to your destination. In your situation, i would suggest a layer that moves moisture over thermal protection as your base and then use the last layer as your insulation. Lots of good insulating outer layers for bow hunting out there.
Dont forget to take care of your feet, hands and head too. Those areas are big problems for losing heat and feeling cold. A neck gaiter on cold days can be a real helpful addition as well.
And remember, if you are tree saddle-ing it, the last thing you need to worry about it camo….movement and scent will bust you way more than pattern. So preventing a bunch of stinky sweat serves double purpose to keeping you warmer but also allowing deer to not get your scent as much. Tho up in a tree, scent tends to travel differently, and thats a whole other discussion.

I wear 2 pairs of insulated long johns top and bottom and a pair of camo pants with a camo long sleeve t shirt up top with a goose down jacket for temps down to 25 degrees. For temps below 25 I’ll wear insulated bib overalls and a coat,, If that’s not enough I’ll adijust the size of the heater needed.
My best piece of advice is buy high quality clothing and avoid the cheap stuff. Quality clothing is warmer, more comfortable and it will last decades… The term buy once cry once has never been truer when it comes to hunting clothes…

IMHO, layering with good gear works.
I don't do cotton.
I wear my insulated Schnee's Pac boots with liner and wool socks to keep my feet warm.
I usually start out with a medium merino wool base layer top and bottom under a pair of pants, sometimes insulated. I pack a shirt, sweater parka and bibs rolled up and fastened to my pack. Have a beanie and glomits stowed. I walk in the half mile with my thermal top on. Once I get to my stand or where I'm going to sit, I start cooling down. Once I cool down a bit i put on the first layer. When I start getting uncomfortable I put on the next layer. Even carry one of the Wal-Mart "throws" to drape over my legs or shoulders should that become necessary. I have good rain gear, but at my age sitting outside in a tripod or on the side of a hill in a monsoon is not as much fun as it used to be.
Best,
GWB

I like merino wool against my skin. I have fleece lined pants and jacket when it is cooler but I also have a fleece throw that is long enough to cover me up to my chest. If that isn't enough, the Little Buddy gets usage. If that isn't enough, I'm staying in camp.

Im a fan of a jacket with wind blocker, I feel as though I dont have to layer to much with wind blocker membrane. FL makes good gear, so does Cabelas

I will wear anywhere from 1-5 layers on top and 1-3 layers on bottom. None of my clothes are bulky, except my bibs, and it usually has to be in the 30's for me to wear them. I'm generally hot natured so most of the time I will wear just pants on bottom and maybe thermals when it gets chilly, and then thermals with a button up shirt on top and a vest. I usually don't wear a jacket unless it's in the 40's. I'm a big fan of vests and neck gaiters. Of course there are times I wear just pants and a t-shirt. Texas has such a wide range of temps...I can start the season in the 80's and it could also be in the 20's later on.

All my layers have Sitka written on them. Texas winters can be harsh too, the humidity in 40° weather is brutal. Get polyester underwear, you’ll be glad you did. Fruit of the Loom makes a nice polyester boxer/brief that will keep you right toasty.
