I'm looking at a deer lease in Edwards County. The owner of the property has feeders, corn and protein, that are filled by a local feed store. If we go with the lease, we will be responsible for 1/2 of the feed cost. The owner is suggesting September to May for the protein feeders. Is this a normal time period? It seems like it would be more like March to October when antlers are growing.

Agreed, mostly. Our deer lay off the protein when the rut starts and only really get back on it in late Jan or Feb, even then only moderately (depending on the winter weather). Come about mid-June they begin hammering it up until the rut starts again. I think this LO's view is off a bit.

We feed year round but they definitely back off it come rut time but it also depends on other forage that’s available in the area

If he is paying half and someone else is doing the lifting, I am all in.

I assume since owner or someone else is paying 1/2 feed bill and fill labor that they are hunting also. Something to take a closer look at in your lease agreement terms.

We feed 9 months to year round depending on range conditions. Deer still hit it during the rut, it just gets a little more random.
