My shooting sports have reduced to handguns at a range. After a brief time my thumbs ache.
I need to find some support for my thumbs. I am considering regular medical wrist and thumb supports. I also have a pair of sailing gloves left over from my saiboat days I am going to try.
Anyone using a gloves or supports when shooting or have any better suggestions?
Thanks
If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

After 30+ years of shooting handguns on an almost weekly basis, my thumbs ache like your thumbs ache.
What makes my thumbs ache more than the actual shooting is the loading of the ammunition into magazines. Using a magazine loader, like the ones that come with most handguns, make a big difference. The nicer ones, like the Maglula, make a huge difference.
The only times I use actual shooting gloves are when doing prolonged shooting with rifles like ARs (hot barrels), shooting 1911s with spur hammers (they bite me lol YMMV), and shooting things like .454 Casull revolvers (Takes the sting out between the thumb and the web of your hand).
Try the magazine loader first and see if it helps, it did for me.

I have arthritis in the main joint of my right thumb. The Ultra compact 9mm (SIG 365) are just no fun to shoot. Haven't tried gloves yet but my go to is an All-Steel Dan Wesson Specialist. Its weight makes it a fun gun to shoot with no issues.
My smallest I have now is a S%W EZ in .380. The EZ line of guns are an old shooters dream.

I only wear gloves during my "pig season" which is Jan-Mar
And I use the Mechanics gloves, thick enough to give warmth and still operate my hands
And ironically, today I tried on some gloves at a local shop...didnt buy them but almost did
Anyway, to answer your question...yes there are some gloves out there that can help...these seemed about like baseball batting gloves but were better made it seemed..sorry I don't recall the name

I had not been to range in year due to knee replacement last June. Mrs LZ and I went last week. Besides me doing most of the shooting, I had three new guns to shoot. Of course, I wanted to check magazine function, so I preloaded all the mags. I fired 7 double stack 9MM and 3 .380 mags with little rest reloading. I am sure that was a contribution to thumb issues. Oh, yes hard to beat a full size, steel framed, exposed hammer fired all American big bore. (Insert multiple grunt sounds) One my favs is a Remington Rand GI 1911 in .45 cal. Re Smith EZ, I have friend that has one in 9MM. Pretty sweet. I think thier internal hammer system is part of thier success. After viewing some reviews, I picked a Taurus TH9 Compact for the Mrs. It is plastic exposed hammer decocker with a frame mounted safety. It's easy to rack and has light recoil. She was happy so I was happy RE no fun to shoot. I bought an all steel Baby Rock in .380 last year. It is almost a clone of a 1911. Rather than a linked barrel, it has a pinned 4 inch barrel. It's a handfull to shoot.

I still have an assortment of mechanics gloves I can try. Thanks, at least I have idea what is avaiable. If all else fails, I can wrap my hand with sports tape on range days.

I've used lambskin driving gloves in the past. Tried the mechanics brand of gloves before and lost too much dexterity with them on. A batting glove or a golf glove also would work well and I've tried both.

bklt2, Not a fan of lambskin gloves, not sure why. I just dont care for the I guess. I had considered batting gloves if they fit tight.
Nolanco, I have a similar pair I used when I owned a sailboat. Those were my first thought to try. I am sure they are packed away in tool room.
Thanks

Good thinking on the Past shooting gloves. If any glove would help I suspect it's these. I also suggest you try the Talon adhesive grips ( https://talongungrips.com/) on your pistol. IME it dampens the rearward motion of the grip because the increased traction lets your fingers and palm absorb some of that energy. I have only used the soft rubber variety. Don't know if this will help you but they have helped me (I'm in no way associated with Talon except as a customer).
"Group think" is not thinking. It is the lack of independent thought. It is a cancer of the mind.

Past glove look like winners, but Midway website indicates not available.
Grip tape is may not a first option due the handguns I have. Many are out of production or have wood grips. Not that any of my menagerie has great dollar value, I would rather not alter them.
Thanks for the ideas.
