Yesterday afternoon our horse Billy was limping around. His back leg had a pretty large opening on it and was infected. He was sweating profusely and walking in circles. Called our vet after sending pics and video to her and she said to put him down - he would not survive it. Either a snake bite that go infected or he got poked with a nail or wire.

Anyway I had to do one of the hardest things I have ever done and that was to put him down. Cried like a baby.

Billy was a bad *** horse - was used for roping and then went into retirement. He died at age 32 so he lived a great life.

Hat tip, Not many people can do it, most just send them to pasture to deal with harshness of mother nature.

Looks like an ol Doc bar horse I use to have, good lucking horse.

That's tough. Man I am so sorry you had to go through that, not sure I could do that. I am sure to end the suffering I could. I pray you will find peace knowing you did the right thing and what had to be done.

Sounds like Billy lived a full long life

Sound like Billy lived a great 32 years. always tough to put down a loved animal.

Dang thats a good looking animal and dang thats old. Ive never had to do anything like that and it must of been real hard. I definitely think doing it yourself was the best way.

This is the primary reason (although, there are a few others) that I never owned one. My grandfather was a horseman. God's peace to you sir. They're incredible animals that deserve our love and respect. Let the tears flow.

Thoughts and prayers to you. Know this, he is running thru a green pasture in heaven now and will be there waiting on you. Cherish the memories until then. I’ve put down a few and it never gets easier. Great times and memories with each one I wouldn’t trade for.

When I lose this pal, I may be done. Raised him from a colt, trained him myself, turned many a steer with him, slept under his feet many a night in a stall or trailer at out of town rodeos. He’s my best friend and I like him more than people. Will break this ol’ boys heart when I lose him.

That’s terrible. At that age, he must have been real family to you.

Shoot my dog is working on being part of the family for 15 years, that’s double. Sorry for your loss.

We buried him today on our property and my hope is that once we are gone others will think that must have been a hell of a horse

That is tough. Sounds like he was a great beast and you took care of him to the end.

Taking a bird dog to the field for the last time was the second hardest thing I have done in my 61 years.

Choked up just thinking about it. Takes some real sand to do this, even though it had to be done.
