buckskinning is a method of tanning, typically used on deer skins. all the fat is scrapped off the inside and hair removed from the outside and is very pliable ... think of a chamois but much stronger leather. My dad sent off several deer hides years ago to be tanned and made into matching buckskin jackets for him and my mother. If memory serves me, he had to send them somewhere up north for that type of tanning but there may be something closer. You might contact some of the local taxidermists as they likely have contacts for their mount tanning needs and might have one for buckskin tanning

There's a good tannery in Pennsylvania near Gettysburg. I used it for my son's first doe, but it looked like they did hides from all over the world. Cannot remember the name but I'm sure you can find it on the net.
