I would like to share some pictures and a few drone clips from our recent trip down the Pecos.

This has been something I’ve wanted to do for years and a bucket list trip for me. It’s not for the faint of heart and takes a little bit of grit to down the river. The trip was full of amazing sights, scenery, great fishing, swimming, kayaking and was an adventure I’ll never forget.

If anyone would like more details as far as gear and all that just shoot me a PM.

We put in at the Pandale Crossing on Tuesday and had planned to go 63 miles all the way to the high bridge by Monday. However we ended up at the weir dam on Saturday which is about 14 miles before the boat ramp at the high bridge. The plan at that point was to rest up and hit the river bright and early Sunday for the long and brutal 14 miles to boat ramp. We would then call our ride and let him know we got done a day early.

The trip is really over at the weir dam. The last 12 miles or so is nothing but open water tough paddling into a headwind.

As luck would have it we met some guys who owned property and had rights to access the weir by road. The forecast called for some major thunderstorms Saturday night and Sunday and they were gracious enough to allow our pick up guy to come get us Saturday. It all worked out great.

Beautiful trip and thanks for sharing. Memories you will never forget. Love the drone view and video.
Look into going down the Rio Grande starting at Lajitas. Santa Elena canyon will swallow you up with darkness in the daytime and washout cave to rest & eat in. Cliffs wall rise up seem like 1000foot in canyon. Plenty of catfish with the Helmit worm found under rocks. Marsalis Canyon and the hot springs on Mexico side are refreshing. Take a burro ride up to cafe and have a fresh caught chicken dinner cooked up. Watch the weather and your timing for hi/low water or trip is ruined. Be careful at all times and make your plans good. Check with NP people before your trip. The rock slides waters will dump you unless careful.cheers
Then there is Langtry trip from NP park to the east. Slower and flatter but still a great ride. GL and thanksw for sharing. cheers

Be very careful on the Rio Grande down there. A storm way out of sight up the river can make the water rise quickly and also a lot of those cliff walls are undercut by the river so that half the river goes under the cliff. If you get sucked under, there ain't nothing but rock overhead when you try to come up for air. Just hope you are still conscious when you get washed out somewhere downstream.

Deer, but not much else. Didn’t even hear the yotes. Looked for Audad during the trip but didn’t see any. We did see wild horses which was pretty neat. We caught a huge soft shell turtle and released him. Wish I would have videoed it.

I have been looking at a day trip on the Pecos. My thought was to camp at Seminole Canyon state park and then put in at the bridge on Hwy 90 and paddle up river and back. You mention the high winds at the end, so would it be a bad idea to put in and take out at Hwy 90 bridge?

You could do that but however far up river you go you’ll have to paddle back into the wind which can be difficult. That part of the river is wide and a lot different than the rest but also very cool. My dad used to hit the sand bass run there years ago, I hear it’s still unbelievable.

Thanks for your post and photos of my favorite place on earth. First trip was 81 in a fiberglass canoe. Such a bad one it would be 22 years before some Texas Tech students talked me into going again in a better canoe. Made it 3 more times in kayaks. Proper planning makes a great trip. Was always my favorite camping and fishing spot, finally moved downstream of Pandale crossing in 96. Got too old for river ratting and moved to Possum Kingdom last year. Miss the old place but got it for sale.

I don’t know what it is about that country that i am drawn so much to. My dad’s family is all from Ft. Stockton and I lived there until I was 9. We visited often, hit up Balmorhea a lot. My first experiences in the outdoors were following my dad up and down mesas looking for big muleys.

I think that country will always have a pull on me.
