The Texas House passed a bill last week that would add a $200 yearly registration fee for all electric vehicles, except for "Neighborhood Electric Vehicles," autocycles, mopeds and motorcycles, according to Tech Crunch's Harri Weber. The annual fees will be "deposited to the credit of the state highway fund," per Weber's reporting.

The House vote follows approval of a similar bill by the Texas Senate in late March.The final version now awaits Gov. Greg Abbott's signature before becoming law.

Lawmakers supporting the bill argue that the fees are necessary to make up for the taxes electric vehicle drivers avoid paying at the pump–taxes that go towards maintaining public infrastructure that they still rely on to get around.

Texas is one of more than a dozen states that have recently moved to add some sort of fee for electric vehicle owners. According to MYEV.com, there are currently 17 states that charge electric vehicle owners extra annual fees, including California, Colorado, Georgia and Ohio.

The state of Texas should Implement an initial registration fee for new Electric vehicles equal to the government rebate on the electric vehicles.

interesting point ... I hadn't thought about EV not buying "fuel" that contains a road fuel tax to help maintain our roads.

200 dollars sounds resonable, since they are not paying fuel tax.

They should assess them a per mile fee, which could be reported when the vehicle is inspected.

Not necessarily. The more you drive a gasser, the more you buy fuel and pay the state fuel tax. Also, most people don’t know that you can keep fuel receipts for fuel in off highway applications and get a rebate on the state taxes you pay. But I’m guessing the actual percentage of people who do that is quite low so the state gets a lot of bonus tax revenue from boats, jet skis, dirt bikes, generators, farm equipment, etc..

A flat fee of $200 is BS. Should be mileage based, the way it already is done indirectly via fuel sales for other vehicles.

It does, I pay around $5 per tank ($0.20/gal) in state fuel taxes.

No, it's about right. 12,000 miles per year/20mpg = 600 gallons. State tax is $.20 per gallon, so (600*.2) the average gas car owner pays $120/year in gasoline taxes.
