Heading to NOLA in a couple weeks, and wondering if any of ya'll know of some great cajun, creole places to chow down at. Been to ACME, DEANIE'S and DRAGO'S(staying at hotel with drago's), will get their char broiled oysters at least once while there.

But can anyone recommend a good spot in or outside of the touristy area? I know I'm stopping at "The Best Stop" in Scott to load up on some boudin and other things.

My daughter and I went down there a while back just to try different places to eat. Irene’s, GW Fish and Cochon were excellent, but Luke is a must do. We regretted not going to Luke last, because they just blew everyone else away.

These are all local places outside the touristy areas.

This is one of my favorites in the world. Located in Kenner. Great local place.

This is also a great one in Chalmette.

They have 4 locations now. that's usually the start of a place going downhill. sad.

Went to the original location about 15 years ago, it was pretty good. There's a little place in Katy near our house that's owned by a Grandkid of Willie Mae. Soul food place, pretty damn good ox tails I must say.

I was not a fan of Deanie's and the only thing I order at Drago's are the charbroiled oysters. That being said Cochon Butcher is great, and I'm checking out Toup's next time I'm there.

This is a really fun place for breakfast or lunch in the Garden District

We also love this fine dining non-touristy restaurant in the Garden District. They have an awesome oyster bar. Make reservations.

Grandma was a fan of Antoine’s. Mom loved Galatoires. I always loved Commander’s Palace.

When I had a ship refueling business in New Orleans (ran it for the mother company), I subbed out the barging to an outfit run by a guy named Leon. Little guy. Wore a Panama hat. Had a big blond boyfriend. Leon would take us to lunch at Antoine’s, but we didn’t use the front door. That’s where the tourists came in. New Orleans is a whole different place, or at least it was back then.

Mandina’s on the West Bank. My wife is a fried softshell crab person and she said that one of the best she ever had was at Impastato’s in Metairie.

I've heard of Commander's Palace. But who had the big blond boyfriend, if I might ask?

I was at Antione's recently and I think it's gone down hill. Still very good, but not what it used to be. Commander's Palace is my current favorite.

Whitewing, Leon had the boyfriend. It was 40 years ago, but it was New Orleans, and the strange and unusual was somewhat normal. The fact that he was a Nancy Boy just didn’t seem that strange at the time. And, business is business. Pretty sure he was stealing ship fuel from me, but I couldn’t prove it.

As to food there, I do believe that the two best meals I have ever had were in New Orleans. One at Commander’s Palace and one at Le Ruth’s (out of business long since). We left NO in 1976 and went to Houston, which was (compared to NO) a food wasteland. Back to NO on business a couple of years later, and I took some business associated to Commander’s Palace. The food was so astoundingly good that it put tears in my eyes.

And if you want the world’s best sandwich, find some small local sandwich shop and order a Meatball P.O. Boy, extra hot mustard, American cheese, dressed. They’ll know what ‘dressed’ means.

Mulate’s.....on Julia st. Three blocks from Harahs. Been going there for years...original zydeco music and dancehall and restaurant. Fun place. Was there about 3 weeks ago. They have a lump crab casserole type dish that is amazing. Also don’t dare leave without the bread pudding with double whiskey sauce.
