Was able to make a deal on this Colt model 1860 Army complete with rig at the Tulsa Gun show. Made in 1870. Factory engraved with ivory grips. Obvious use but not abused. The steer head buckles probably indicate a Texas gun or certainly used by a cattleman or cowboy. Wish it could talk….

That very cool., NP. In very nice shape for its age, too!

I've never requested research from Colt and I have no idea whether their records go that far back, but I'd be tempted to look into it.

There was a recent article in the TSRA magazine about a Colt with similar ivory grips. It was a single action army, but had the similar Mexican eagle grips and similar engraving.

Did the seller say whether he had requested a Colt letter or done any specific research?

I’m not sure this one will letter due to record gaps on the early revolvers but am going to check. It does have all matching numbers and the correct “E” and “I” stamps on the frame to show that both the engraving and grips are factory. It came out of a known collection and the gun and rig have pretty obviously been together for a long, long time. They were likely bought together.

A letter won’t tell me a lot more but it would give where it was shipped. That would be great to know.

That’s a killer piece of history. Knowing how harsh life
was back then, there’s a good chance that revolver saw some action. All kinds to boot. And may have protected the original owner from too much harm.

This has reminded me to stop by the Texas Ranger museum. I haven’t been in 40 years. I have work now in Temple and there’s no reason I can think of why I shouldn’t go.

Thanks for sharing. This made my day.

That is a SWEET weapon.

We took my dads company Winnabego mule deer hunting in the 80’s. It was the rig they parked at the oil show in Odessa every other year. The old man would always pat the camper and say he’s glad this old bitch can’t talk.

We went to the Ranger Museum about 2 weeks ago. We had been years ago too but it’s been totally redone. Well worth the trip. A few pics: [Linked Image]

Wow, that outfit looks like it came right off the pages of Rattenbury's "Packing Iron." How do you intend to conserve the leather?

Probably won’t shoot one that old. The leather is surprisingly supple so a little wax conditioner every now and then is probably all it will need.
