I bet I wouldn't recognize the campus now, haven't been back since 1986.
Looks like the College of Forestry is getting a big upgrade, good news there.

It's rapidly changing down there...not sure if for the better or for the worse. It changed drastically from the time I left (2009) to a year ago. The old SFA vibe is gone - campus and town. Kind of sad.

My alma mater too (bachelor and master's degrees) and I know it's way different than when I was there. A lot of the old icon buildings are gone, and agree...totally different feel. frown

I'm guessing Lumberjack day is not what it used to be.

Hall 16 was crazy. eeks333

My frat was ROTC. I remember one morning during Rush when the boys and I had just gotten back from an all-nighter walking all over the Experimental Forest for a land navigation course, we were standing in the ROTC building's parking lot in our BDUs, exhausted and pretty cranky. Well, about that time, the frat parade came by with all their new plebes in the beds of pickups. One fat mouth yelled at us, "I'm gay...join the Army!"

We looked at each other and said almost in unison, "Oh, hail no!" We jumped back into our vics and chased that truck down and finally caught up at their frat house. Let's just say them boys were unprepared for a couple vehicle loads of military guys to occupy their front yard by force looking for the whistle-britches who was running his mouth. Man, I had never seen such crawfishing in my life... roflmao

We had a unique ROTC class too with 5 of the 14 of us being prior service combat arms NCOs. Some bad mama jamas with a few Rangers and two Green Berets in that class too.

salute

The wife graduated from there in 1983. Seems every time we go back there to visit her family there are changes happening. Highway 59 is getting a major upgrades on the southwest and south side. Overpasses where it heads towards Lufkin.

I miss Jitterbug's too...back when it played real country music.

The campus has indeed undergone some sorely needed changes and upgrades. But I agree the SFA 'vibe' is gone. My Daughter graduated in 2008 and in the time between then and now....the student body is wildly different and I don't think the pride and cohesiveness is what it used to be.

Nacogdoches itself hasn't grown much in population or spread outward (for which we are grateful) but has gotten more modern in terms of restaurants and businesses that have come here. That is not wholly a bad thing....but some of the Quaintness of the city has been lost along with the change.

We had way too much fun there. About 1979 or 80 my roommates and I organized a large party, we called it a "woodsy", on one of the paper company lands. Advertised for it on bulletin boards on campus and collected donations a week in advance. Ended up with 11 kegs but ran out and took up another collection and bought 3 more. We had music and lights...it was great! We did several of these but this one was the largest. At one point ~200 cars were counted on the dirt road leading to the clearing.
cheers banana

Woodsies went on for years, I graduated in 86 and we had them.
Keg was the prize for greased pole climb at Lumberjack Day.

Only seen the campus one time when I was doing a funeral detail close by for a WWII veteran.

Saw him all three times. I played a lot of pool at Crossroads and the nickel pitchers and free crawfish boils were fun times.
