For pinning and welding a muzzle device to a barrel to obtain a 16” rifle length, would JB Weld be sufficient? Curious if that meets the “permanent” requirement to secure the pin.

No.
It does not meet the requirement.
Also, It will probably burn up.

Im surprised the internet didnt break by yet another pin and weld question being posted. Do a quick google search or on arfcom…..there must be a million threads on this.

The probability of ever being questioned about a p&w job is probably incredibly low but Id rather not chance it. Have the proof that a gunsmith did it. Im sure the ATF’s ears perk up any time they hear “i did it myself”

I can only imagine the shocked face and rifle owners pucker factor when the BATFE easily removes a "pinned & welded" muzzle device. Good luck.

Their new criteria that they talk about in court when discussing whether or not something is a machine gun or a receiver is whether or not it can be made into any of those things within 8 hours in a fully stocked and equipped machine shop operated by a master machinist. I could probably cut out and build receivers from scratch for about 10 full auto Browning 1919s in that amount of time. Since they refuse to provide details of their test criteria you're guilty of possessing anything they say you're guilty of possessing and they have been getting away with this for decades.

I've been looking into the pin and weld thing. You can spend most of the money for a new barrel sending the old one out for a pin and weld job. Seems like a lot of trouble for 1.5-2" of barrel. Personally it seems a lot easier to buy a 16" barrel and be done with it all.

That's the way I see it too. In fact, I prefer 18s and 20s...but then, I'm not Spec Ops like so many others are.

Pinning and Welding is not tough. You simply screw on the flashhider, drill a hole but not all the way through, Drive in the appropriate then, and then hit the hole with a TIG welder and a filler rod. Takes a grand total of 10 minutes.

Its really not worth it. I have 2 that were done by a gunsmith and they were $50 each. I saved the work order if I ever needed to prove. Whats stupid is when my 16” ARs are next to them its not that noticeable of a difference so really was kinda pointless.

Any gunsmith recommendations in the FTW area? The gun in question is not a standard AR so the barrel is not easy to replace with a longer one.
