Buddy of mines dad passed away and I'm trying to help him put a $$ figure on this rifle to help his mom with cash. Can anyone take a look at this and help me put a value on it? I'd appreciate it. I told him this group would know a lot more than me. Looking for honesty.
It's a 270, Leupold 4-12 VARI-XII, it's not in perfect condition but I would say in great shape with normal wear.
It’s a commercial Mauser so we will need to see who made it/imported it. Flip it over and look at the other side of receiver. The stock and jeweling on the extractor are also not original, so someone has done work on it at some point
"custom" Mausers can be a crap shoot quality wise. Anybody from Jim Bob with a pipe wrench and vise up to your top tier smiths have built them. So, without some documentation on the build or knowing who did the work its value is primarily as a shooter. I'd say $600-$700 with scope if it functions correctly and shoots decent.
Not a whole lot of people seem to be interested in shooting or working on Mausers these days.
That is all just my opinion though. Have bought and sold a few of them over the years.
To me, it looks like a Zastava commercial Mauser action. They were imported by Interarms (among others) and were "gunsmith specials". Some were really good, some were not. So the value of these is not very high.
