Looking for recommendations in the DFW or Waco area for someone that can give some honest appraisals on some men's and women's rings.

My grandpa passed a couple of years ago, and his wife passed last month so I'm helping my mother with the estate. I know what they had the items insured for, and that is a six figure number, but I want to get a good current value for mom to work with.

This is who I use. There's usually quite the spread between insured value and Market value. Ask him for both.

I've used Dallas Gold and Silver Exchange. And like blkt2 said, the spread between insurance and real world value can be huge.

I've used these guys before and been very happy. I like that they don't buy or sell, so they have no skin in the game.

Don't get your feelings hurt when they provide you dollar amounts. They may be just the value of the scrap gold.

Appraisal and actual buy offer will have a large gap. Those appraising and not in the wholesale retail business are not doing you any favors. Unless you have unique pieces I would expect .40-.50 on the dollar. Just went through this last year. Economy will not do you any favors either. YMMV

I understand what you are saying, but we are dealing with several large diamonds and other gemstones as well.

That is understandable as well, we just need a starting point to work down from.

Big diamonds will sell. Jewelers don't want chip diamonds, they have buckets of them.

I had a father in law once upon a time that was a jeweler and had been for 40 years. Literal buckets is correct.

The large diamonds will do well but they will still only be about 50% of insured. Good luck and I hope I’m wrong. Always get 2-3 offers before selling. Any smaller place has a market in profit per piece and not volume. If they make an offer at all it will be low.
