We had some dozer work done at our property. The soil is extremely sandy, it’s like walking the deep sand. Any tips or tricks on trying to level it out some without big machine and equipment? Was thinking of dragging something around with my truck. Any advice would be much appreciated.
The company I used to work for had pallets made with 4x4`s like in this picture. They would be heavy enough to level the sand just pulling behind a small tractor. You could make any width you wanted and add weight if needed. Disassemble after you are done with it and use lumber for another project.
If you don’t have any RR rail set up as a drag, weighted cattle panels will help here.
This works. I took a hog panel and ratchet-strapped a bunch of firewood to the top of it to weigh it down. Used it to level up a food plot I made. Kinda like a home made drag harrow that I pulled behind a 4 wheeler and it worked perfect.
Another vote for hog panel with a couple of post tied on top of it. Be careful with that if you have roots or brush stubble sticking up. A 1 1/2" root will stop you dead.
Absolute must with the sandy soil on my ranch - wait for moisture, then get to work. When dry, tires will just get buried in a hurry, even more when trying to drag something. For a day or two after some rain- you can get much better traction and the soil will level / pack so much easier. This is been my experience 100% of the time over the past 45 years. It's possible that your sand is different, but over my lifetime throughout west Tx and the panhandle, the only time to do that type of work is when there is moisture in the sand. Good luck!
Dragging something works well. We have used a 7’ chain harrow purchased from tractor supply a lot for this and it works good. Various homemade contraptions like mentioned will work too I guess it just depends how much area you are covering and how long you need it to last.
Thanks for the replies. I have a couple of cattle panels thrown at are other property and have access to free pallets of wood. What would work best between cattle panel or wood pallets? Don't have a 4 wheeler or side by side but do have an old Honda 3 wheeler that I can use if it will get the job done.

I use cattle panels with a tire or two on top of it to give it a little weight to keep from bouncing.

Thanks, do you place the tire or tires directly in the center of the panel or the sides?
We have some wood pallets that are out of 4x4's and 2x4's. Also have some weighted welded wire cattle panels. Might try them both since we have the free on hand and see if they work. You guys think my Honda 3 wheeler will be able to pull them around in the sand?

My John Deere D130, small 22HP lawn tractor, pulls a drag mag or a "standard" pallet around my yard to level sand, so I expect your 3-wheeler can as well. Though my sand is not very deep when I'm doing it. I think the deepest I've done was about an inch.
So I have some chain link fencing, about 10-12 feet of it at home that I can use to build a drag or have some weighted welded wire cattle panel at the ranch. Would either of these work about the same or one work better than the other. I'd like to have the drag built and ready to go before heading out to the property and if the cattle panel will work better I'll stop by my local feed store and grab one for 20 bucks.
I was planning on attaching a couple of 2x4's to the front of it with eye bolts to attach a chain to. Could also throw on a couple of cement block on top of the 2x4's for weight. Will probably add a 2x4 to the end of it to keep it all spread out.
