Any of you pulled your own pump out of a well? Looking for advice on pulling the pipe and pump out of our water well. It's PVC pipe which is down about 175 feet. Will I need some sort of hoist or can it be pulled out by hand?

I'd call the man. A screw up and it can get quite a bit more expensive to fish pipe, pump, etc. from down hole.

Need a truck with a tower.
Or you can rig a clamp and hope you don’t drop it once you start disassembling.

I would get an estimate from a pump service. I have seen a few DYI pulls go south. I know of one failed DYI, became lost cause. It resulted in a new well dug. At least see if it is worth your gamble.

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

I. have pulled wells by hand and replaced the pump but never anything over 50' deep. 175' is definitely in call someone with the right tools range. The deepest one I pulled by hand was about 30' and I was 18 and in the best physical condition of my life and it kicked my butt.

Thanks for the advice. I reached out to the company who installed it years ago but they didn't answer. Will give them a try again later today.

I ended up having to on one of my pumps-after several calls to our local well driller with no returns(they were even the outfit that originally drilled it). The pump on this well was set at 340' and pulled it with the help of front end loader and slip jaw clamps. Having a second set of hand's will help out if the clamps slip to minimize lost ground It was a slow task but got the job done. I converted this well over to solar and was a great investment.

Nice work
Probably saved yourself at least $1k doing it yourself. What size pump do you have and how much water does it make?

It is probably time to pull mine again and install a new one but I think I'm going to call a local guy to come do it so that I can pay him to purge it this time and see how much water it can make and go ahead and upsize the pump some. My well is nearly 300' deep and the last time I checked I had water up to about 65' below ground and the pump now is only 140' down. If I can upsize enough to make 40-50gpm I think I'm going to do it so that I can eventually pump water out of one of my tanks to irrigate coastal and at the same time keep that tank full with the well.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

My well is 164 feet deep. I last had it pulled in January 2022. The people that did it had to drive 40 miles each way to get here. They charged $100 to remove the well house and replace it. They charged $775 to pull the pump and replace it. As far as I can tell they didn't mark up the pump an insane amount. The price for it was inline with what I found online. This was a well with a 5 hp pump, 8" casing, and 2" discharge pipe.

Did $775 include the cost of the pump? For a 5 HP pump that seems very reasonable/cheap.

FWIW: A lot of folks are going with DC pumps during the replacement process to make it simpler to use solar. Striving to become more independent from the grid is becoming more common. Most often. they add a tank and pressure pump in order to use a low-power well pump. But you can go big too. It's not the answer for everyone, but it is an option for those leaning that way. If your well guy doesn't understand, do your own research.

No. That was just labor. Pump was around $2500 I think.

The reason why I want to pull our pump out is it's been down for a good while. Planning on replacing it with a solar set up since we don't have power out there. Always had to run it off a generator. All I need is to get it pulled out and we can do the rest. Going with a local member's solar well set up.
