I hog hunt with several .44 mag pistols and a bolt action Ruger M77/44. Lots of bang out of a short barrel and you cant beat a Ruger M77 for its toughness. My 2nd favorite is a .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk Bisley with 7.5 " barrel. Looking for a .454 Casull to go with it. Rossi makes one, dont know much about others. What is recoil like compared to a .45 Colt Carbine? Ammo info for hogs? Deer? Dont know much about it.

I bought one, fixed it up, and sold it here a while back. After a couple ownership changes and a long delay out of production, Rossi is making them new again. Unfortunately they're only available in stainless. The price is LESS than I got for the one I fixed up really nicely. My image host isn't working right now so I cannot post pics...

I would expect the recoil to be similar to a 45-70 which is pretty stout depending on the load. I shoot 250-350 grain bullets at 2300-1900 fps in my Marlin 1895 and I can tell you after shooting 20 of those I'm done and I don't consider myself recoil sensitive, I can shoot a 45 colt carbine all day. I would say 454 recoil with full house loads recoil will be a LOT more than the 45 Colt with factory loads. I had a Freedom Arms 454 for several years and recoil is way more than factory 45 Colt. BTW, I love my Marlin 1895!

The 92 action will handle a lot. It’s a very lite rifle with a metal butt plate. I haven’t had A 454 but I’ve loaded 45 Colt with 360 LFN and a bunch of H110. It will flat stomp you. Makes for some serious dead pigs though. I settled on a 300g at 1600. Slightly more pleasant to shoot.

That’s about what I shoot out of my 94 44 mag. I’ve shot end-to-end through a hog, and completely shattered a cow elk’s scapula.

It’s a thumper for sure.

An 1892 will take more than an 1894 and they're lighter too. The Rossi .454 and .480 Ruger '92's have a threaded-in magazine tube and rubber butt pad where all the others have a pinned tube and metal pad.

Then again, a .45C 1892 can handle nearly 60K PSI so you can load a .45 Colt R92 pretty dang hot (at your own discretion). I'm not sure the .454 is worth the premium unless that's just what you want. I know for a fact a Marlin 1895 in .45-70 ain't worth what they're bringing and I'm a Marlin fan.

Pass the gravy.
