I am part of our Guardian Program at the school I work in. We do extensive training for this and at this point in time we are handgun only. There is a very good possibility we are going to also have access to a short barrel rifle. We will receive a $1,000 bonus for being in the program that we can use toward purchasing a firearm. The firearm will be mine to keep if I ever leave. With that said, what are some good options for me within about a $1,200 to $1,800 budget. This includes the firearm, red dot optics with magnification and flashlight for rail.

Give me ideas on good but affordable options for all three that are within that budget. Thanks!

Wilson Combat will get a lot of recommendations, and for good reason. Personally, I'm a Rock River guy.

Optics and Flashlight, options are endless.

First, I appreciate you volunteering to be in a program such as this and for your school districts willingness to allow this on campus. Plus, the fact it appears they are going about it the right way as far as training etc. It’s sad that we need it, but this is the world we live in now. I pray you never have to be in a situation for which you are training for.

As far as your question, as above, Wilson Combat, Bravo Company (BCM), JP Enterprise, to name a few in the upper end of your budget.

Are you specifically looking for factory SBR options? I don't know of any factory SBR's that are less than $1000. Most are around $1500-$2000.

If I was in this situation I'd probably go with the following.

Daniel Defense MK18
Aimpoint T1/H1
Steamlight ProTac 2.0 Long Gun Light

Never had a hiccup with my Windham Weaponry with Burris AR-332 (3x) on top. Would need to add flashlight.

Spikes Tactical has served me well through the years but Wilson Combat will always be my favorite. And they may offer a discount if you let them know what the purchase is intended for.

Love my Wilson Combat. My first thought was "I wonder if WC would offer a discount if you called them up and told them what you are doing with the weapon?" If I were in your shoes, I would be making that call.

I've never handled a Wilson but have heard nothing but great things about them. I personally am a huge Daniel Defense fan.

When you buy, I might consider a 300 BO over the 5.56. Should be less likely to over penetrate which I would think would be a good thing if God forbid you ever had to use it in that environment.

Sounds like a great program. Need to see if our school has one like it. I'd do that.

Palmetto State offers some really good deals for the money. It is not second-rate stuff like Bear Creek Arsenal and such...it's not on the same level as Daniel Defense or Wilson Combat, but it's good stuff. I'd just be sure and test it pretty thoroughly, but I'd do that no matter where I got it from. Use the money you save for ammo for practice or maybe for some training.

Many are recommending brands way outside his budget.

For a non Gucci AR15 in your budget, I would look at LWRC DI and FN Tactical Carbine.

FN, Holosun combo, Surefire will fit in that budget.

You put this together yourself, which is FUN (or get someone to help you if it ain't your idea of fun) and you end up with a pretty damned good gun. All you need in addition to the kit is a stripped lower receiver, easily had for less than $100.

Your schools have sros

I run a colt and a stag and have had no issues closest I came was primers blowing out from a bad lot of ammo and primers getting stuck under factory trigger. This was a known issue and was w training ammo. I replaced the triggers in both w cmc enclosed no more concerns
Aim points pro on both and vickers sling streamlight tlr1s run pmags and switched to mag pull furniture
Both are identical

i am cancelling my subscription, i am tired of your issues!

Here we go again. Posting on topic before the lock.

If you really want what is considered a short barrel rifle (SBR), you will need to increase the budget when the budget includes optics and accessories as stated above.

Pass the gravy.

The whole "you aren't an armorer" is primo fuddlore. It's not like he's making an 80% lower with misaligned pin holes and poor sear engagement.

If it was my pick, I'd build on an 11.5-13.7 upper receiver. Short enough to be a little handier, while still staying above the 2400fps threshold for cavitation. Something like the Aero 12.5 would be a solid budget choice, and you can bump up to BCM, SOLGW, etc if you want a little more premium materials. https://www.primaryarms.com/aero-precision-m4e1-threaded-barrel-upper-556-carbine-atlas-r-one-12.5

The other advantage of the 13.7 is that with a pinned/welded muzzle device you can save the $200 and trouble of registering it with the ATF. So that $200 can go towards a solid optic/magnifier setup like an Eotech and G33 with a good flip to side mount. The Holosun setup is a decent budget alternative to that and will save around $500.

Why go with a shorter barrel and pinned/welded muzzle device instead of a 16 inch barrel without a muzzle device? Same length and get another inch plus of barrel without extending the OAL

Buy a complete gun, do not modify it in “any” way, never ever use reloads. I can tell you from first hand experience; you ain’t got the money for what these attorneys are going to do to you.

Seemingly lost in the ruckus is that the OP was wanting a complete gun in the first place. There are usually a few for sale on the forum at less than $1k. He didn’t say he wanted to build one.

Except he said he wants an SBR with a light and magnified red dot for less than $1800.

Pass the gravy.

Thank you Coach White for your service.

I don't want to go on a RANT, but do want to clarify a few things. I worked 20 years in the BIG Region 10 government schools, have had several SRO and JROTC friends and some other experiences as well.

In your situation, I would choose whatever your municipality policy revenue collection officers are issued (AKA "police"). Limit your liability. Don't build or modify anything. You can add a light and optic, but KISS.
