So, I was not planning on planting anything until fall, but is there anything that I could plant now to help. But understand that what I plant right now, will just have to be thrown on the ground. I can't get a tractor in there until September.
Cabin rental in Pagosa Springs, Co. Sleeps 10, If interested please PM me.

Clover and Chicory. Add in Turnips, Radishes or Rape seeds also.

Do TX whitetails know what to do with these? No flame, serious question. I was discussing this exact topic with other hunters last week and beyond oats and clover I had no answers on what else to plant.

It adds nutrients to the soil and discompacts it some as the roots decay away. I see turnips torn up in my fields as soon as the first good freeze. Something is eating them, maybe pigs, but it might be deer too. hard to know for sure.

I planted Purple Top turnips in the early 90's for 6 yrs along with Madrid clover as my fall food plots. It was the only thing I planted in about 60 acres. I planted Daikon Radishes in my plots for 3 yrs from 2017 to 2019 and deer wiped them out. So yeah they will eat them and eat them very well once they know what they are. Purple Tops take a freeze to make them more palatable....after 3 yrs they ate the top after they came up. I planted about 6 lbs per acre along with 20 lbs of clover.

I use to mix purple tops with wheat, to graze cattle out. The deer normally didn’t touch the turnip tops until late Jan early Feb. you. This was central Texas with low deer densities for most part.

We did Turnips once at our place outside of Mineloa and the deer torn them up after a freeze. We planted them a few times after that but they never did as well as they did that first time.

I wonder about beets. I've seen beet trimmings from canneries/packing houses dumped on cow pastures and the cattle couldn't get to them quick enough. It's a little bit startling the first time you see that huge smear of deep red.

I guess I’ve tried them all in 2 different spots about 1/2 mile apart. Wheat, oats, rye, turnips, beets, sweet potato’s , corn and probably others. I’ve sometimes mixed seeds when broadcasting prior to covering. The new stuff took time for the deer to figure out what to do with them. Not so with the cereal grains.
Then the pigs showed up and made a mess of the whole fields. Every year I tell myself that I ought to plant again. So far, I haven’t in the last 10 years.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

Ranch I hunt planted turnips. Deer were not eating them so he hand pulled a couple dozen out all the way. Some more pulled half way. Deer figured it out.

I planted an acre and a half of Texas wildflower mix.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

send a soil sample or samples to TEXAS A&M This. We had been putting fertilizer on a plot and it didn't seem to help. Got the soil sample results and we needed LIME really badly. Wow, what a difference it made.
