Yep. After i filet them, I do a shallow V cut on the red strip and it pulls right out. Fried up in my seasoned beer batter, they eat real good. And as mentioned, if you are trying to get kids or a girlfriend (in my case) interested in fishing, just put them on a school of sandies and they’ll want to come back again. Now they’re hooked and you can progress to slower stuff like crappie fishing by promising how much better than sandies they taste.

Sandies taste great - they just need to be bled out. If you don't like them - try it - it makes a world of difference.

I have only heard that from Bass fishermen at Fork. Even then, a guide told me that he can take clients out and if they can't get Bass he can give them some fun with Sandies, as we call them around here.

For many years I would take my wife, son, and a handful of my son's friends to Cooper Lake and load the boat with Sandies. My wife and I do a pretty good job of cleaning them. When I say pretty good job, I mean taking the time to trim the nasty red off the filets. We think that if cleaned right they are almost as good as Crappie.

Sandies for a wife or son would be good

But for me I like Bass, catching a sandbass they just kinda slide to the right and left all the way into the boat like catching a piece of trash. I have hooked some 5 to 10 lbs Hybrids, those things can put up a fight.

Use a rod small enough you couldn’t turn the whitebass around for bait on and they fight great. Largemouths are some lame duck fighters to me they are decent eating though.

Catching white bass in a winding creek sometimes no wider than five feet across and a foot deep is pure fun with a light spinning reel. I hope the Old Iron Bridge on Willis Creek at Lake granger has water in it this season

In Alabama, the locals call them Stripes. When I moved here everyone was talking about catching a two man limit of Stripes. I thought they were talking about Stripers, until I saw some pictures.

Never heard that one.

I call them sandbass or sandies, White bass sounds yankee to me, stripes is just an odd name

Don't know about stripes, but they're known as whites all over Toledo Bend. Doesn't sound much Yankee to me. Now, y'all start talkin' yellow bass, we're in business.

Interesting....I'm from south Texas and never heard the term "sand bass or sandie" until I moved to north Texas.

My dad grew up in Ft. Stockton and I lived there until I was 8. I remember catching them by the hundreds around the Pecos high bridge. They would run up the Pecos out of the Rio Grande.

Everyone called them sandies or sand bass. That’s about as far away from DFW as you can get.

I then moved to Brady where I graduated and everyone called them white bass. Both very rural areas.

I love fishing the whitebass run. Have seen reports of ppl catching big females already in rowlett creek. I stay away from that mess. I plan to target whitebass with the fly rod this year down at Colorado bend and at Ray Roberts. My absolute favorite place to fish the run is on the Sabine River near Carthage. I would bet $$ that the Sabine produces the biggest whitebass in the state.

Always 'White Bass' everywhere I fished for them in Texas (admittedly not the entire State). Sand Bass or Sandies in Oklahoma.
